“We got engaged on a trip to New Zealand to visit Justin’s family and friends: it was the biggest and best surprise I’ve ever had! We live in Australia and had a trip home to Glasgow booked for my dad’s 60th so we both agreed this was the time to get married.

From the beginning we always knew we wanted a small, relaxed and fun wedding. Ashton Lane in Glasgow’s West End was the perfect place. We had our ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers’ 23 Montrose Street venue, followed by a beautiful meal at Ubiquitous Chip. We hired the mezzanine area within the restaurant, which allowed us to enjoy the buzz of a Friday night in the west end, but also enabled us to have our own privacy.

We then headed to Brel, also on Ashton Lane, where we’d hired a covered outdoor area which allowed us to have a few more guests to join in the celebrations and enjoy our cakes (a doughnut tower and cheese cake). At 1am, we headed to The Berkeley Suite and danced the night away until the wee hours!

The saying ‘People Make Glasgow’ couldn’t be more true – Glaswegians really are the most kind-hearted people and helped make our day! With Justin’s family travelling from New Zealand, it was important to us that we kept our wedding small so we could enjoy both our families being together, which doesn’t happen often! We had 25 guests for the ceremony and dinner, and about 50 for bubbles and cake at Brel.

My biggest bargain of the day was my veil. I couldn’t find any simple, fine veils that I liked so my mum and I bought a meter of tulle and attached it to a comb. £4.99 later, we had my veil.

Top tip: Do it your way! Make sure you have a day that you want and that reflects who you are as a couple. Whilst planning our big day I felt that some people judged our plans, as it wasn’t a ‘normal’ wedding. Even if I’d won the Lottery this is still the wedding we would have had! It was brilliant from start to finish – if I could, I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.”
