“Craig and I got engaged in November 2014. After 13 years together, we were already like a married couple, so it seemed natural to take the next step! The moment we stepped into Dundas Castle we knew it was our fairytale wedding location. We had visited one other venue prior, but we hadn’t been blown away like we were with this historic, five-star South Queensferry castle.
The first wedding planning decision I made was the dress: a Pronovias gown that I bought at Ivory Pinks in Bothwell. It was the first dress I tried on and I made my mind up right away.
We wanted a thoroughly Scottish wedding. Craig works in Saudi Arabia and misses home very much so we included as many elements associated with our country as possible – a bonnie castle with the saltire flag flying proudly, a piper, kilts and an address to a haggis!
Our humanist celebrant was Laura Dolan. She was fantastic and put together a ceremony that was both emotional and personal. She recounted some beautiful memories during the service, which reminded us of the amazing life we have had together so far.
Our friend Andrew Morris is a singer-songwriter and played some of his songs as we signed our marriage documents. Craig’s best friend (and one of the best men) Colin Wood made a poignant reading during the ceremony and my brother Paul read some beautiful words from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Between these and the memories our celebrant shared about us with our guests, our ceremony couldn’t have been any better.
The men’s kilts were our favourite wedding detail. They were very different to traditional tartan kilts and really stood out. The cream-hued outfits were particularly photogenic against the backdrop of the castle exterior. Both our best men’s speeches were fantastic. However, we were totally surprised when Colin performed an original piece of rap he had prepared for our big day along to the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ theme song. Craig and I were in stitches, as were all of our guests!”
Top tip: “If you don’t get goosebumps when visiting a venue, keep looking. You will know when the right one comes along as the excitement will be palpable.”
