Bring your own venue and you can tie the knot in your dream location

If you’re considering a marquee for your wedding but you’re not sure that it’s right for you, consider the advantages. They can be set up in a huge variety of different locations, so are ideal if you have a particular view you’d like to see or a special spot where you’d love to celebrate your big day. Marquees are also very adaptable in terms of setting and decoration.
“A marquee provides flexibility with regards to the site you choose,” says Katherine Self of Finesse Marquees ( “Most incorporate power, light, catering facilities and toilets, making them a self-contained option for an event. And you can increase the size of a venue with an ‘add-on’ option that will provide extra space. That means you get flexibility in terms of number of guests – a marquee package is only limited by your imagination.”
Jane Henderson of Henderson Marquee Hire ( agrees: “With a marquee you can choose colour schemes, finishes and size. In short, your ‘function room’ can be tailor-made to your requirements.”

For couples with a dream location in mind, a marquee provides the ideal solution. Whether it’s a sunny beach or a family garden that you’ve got your heart set on, installing a marquee on the site will give you the chance to marry in your perfect spot. Have a look at the websites of the various suppliers and call them to explain your wishes. They should be able to help you with any practical issues before coming out to the site to gauge what size and type of marquee would fit best. “A site visit is very important to ensure that a marquee is suitable for the proposed area,” says Finlay Bell of North of Scotland Marquees ( “A number of issues need to be considered – is the site level, can we get access, are there overhead power lines, how is the site safety? It is also an excellent opportunity to discuss your event in more detail.”
in-tents and purposes
As soon as you’ve decided a marquee’s for you, do your research and book your supplier. This is especially important if you’re planning a summer wedding, as marquee companies can be fully booked over a year in advance. “If you want a popular date in the summer months on a Saturday or a Bank Holiday weekend, it’s crucial to book early,” advises Katherine Self.

Come rain or shine, most modern marquees are built to cope with our temperamental weather, so there’s no need to worry that your guests will be too cold (or even, unlikely as it sounds, too hot). “Thermostatic-controlled heating can be installed to ensure an even temperature throughout, no matter the weather or the time of year,” explains Edward Scovell of Arc Marquees ( Glass-panelled windows allow your guests to enjoy the views, and detachable sides mean that should the sun shine, you and your guests can make the most of it.

There are lots of practicalities to think about when hiring a marquee, so have a look online and make sure that you’ve got everything covered. Your supplier should be able to help you too, giving recommendations on installing heaters and a power supply as well as which type of marquee is most suitable for your site. “You’ll need expert advice and suggestions,” agrees David Hardie of Myreton Marquee Hire ( “For example, traditional marquees are much nicer – and cheaper – but they can’t be used on a hard surface such as concrete or tarmac because they need pins to anchor them.”
Getting your supplier out to your site is the best way to find out exactly what’s needed. “A site visit can be arranged, where everything can be discussed in greater detail and a scale drawing of the layout will be put together to help envisage the marquee and its uses,” explains Edward Scovell.
At this point, you can firm up the size, layout and type of marquee that you’ll be using. Don’t worry about making these decisions yourself – the experts are best placed to let you know what will be required and take into account any extras you might have forgotten about. “Sufficient space for bars and caterers will need to be considered, for example,” says Finlay Bell. “The marquee company will recommend a size based on your numbers for the meal and if there are any additional evening guests.”

Do you envisage your reception twinkling with fairy lights, rocking to a lavish party theme, or sweetly romantic and rustic? A marquee can be kitted out with whatever decorations you want, allowing you to add plenty of personal touches and stamp your personality on the day. “Marquees are a blank canvas and can be decorated as you wish – the sky is the limit,” says David Hardie. “The only things that might restrict you are money and your own imagination.”
Certain elements can be altered to make your marquee truly unique, says Jane Henderson: “You can have natural wooden flooring or, if you want, different coloured carpeting can be supplied to keep in with your theme, and there’s quite a range of furniture available. Lighting can also be varied to create different effects. Various types of windows are also available, and porches and walkways can be added.”
With a marquee, many of the usual restrictions are gone, leaving you free to create the perfect party atmosphere for your special day.

You’ll have to spend a penny or two to get them, but portable toilets are a marquee essential. Bridget Roberts of The Classical Loo Company explains how her state-of-the-art facilities won’t leave your guests caught short

Loos are often one vital aspect many engaged couples overlook when planning their wedding day, yet they’re among the most important to get right! The Classical Loo Company offers three types of facilities to suit all requirements and budgets:

  • Re-circulating trailers offer a classic stylish interior with polished wooden floors, quality fittings and full-length mirrors. All essential consumables are included – we’ll provide the toilet paper, disposable hand towels, cotton hand towels and quality soap and handcream. A stand-by attendant can also be offered as an option – they will ensure the facilities remain in a clean and tidy condition throughout your event.
  • A Tempo unit is a trailer but has no steps. With a modern and fresh contemporary interior, this unit uses innovative vacuum technology to offer a fresh-water flush rather than using chemicals. Its floor-level access makes this unit ideal for elderly or infirm guests.
  • The Flexiloo concept provides the ultimate in luxury temporary toilet facilities – once these are in position, you would hardly realise they are in fact temporary! These are individual modules which are built into your marquee or in any suitable covered area – garages are proving popular!
