“We live in Portland, Oregon, but when it came to where we wanted to get married, we both immediately agreed on Scotland. We then discovered the Fairy Glen, the location for our ceremony, on a Facebook travel post and were completely bowled over.

We invited just two guests to join us for our wedding: my closest friend John (AKA Peaches) was also our celebrant and did my hair and makeup, while Dani’s best pal from college, Colleen, braved the roads and drove us through the Highlands in a rented Ford Galaxy. We met up with them in Glasgow a couple of days before the wedding and we all journeyed north together. Our wedding was just the cherry on top of a wonderful vacation.

Peaches is Wiccan and was ordained online through the Universal Life Church specially for our wedding. We had a very non-traditional ceremony that included witchy magic and handfasting.  Both Dani and I were thrilled that we didn’t have to endure the pomp and ceremony of walking down the aisle.

We wanted our photographer to be fun and excited about adventuring with us around Skye. We feel so privileged that we got to work with Alison White; she was warm, welcoming and really understood what we were looking for. She scouted sights for us to take photos ahead of the day and made a plan that would take advantage of the island’s gorgeous scenery. Our ‘first look’ shots were a real highlight.

After we parted ways with Alison in Portree, we had a picnic in a park then drove to Aviemore, via Loch Ness. We got extremely lost en route and didn’t get to our apartment til late, where we made tacos, drank cocktails and reminisced about the wonderful day and its many highlights. From getting a round of applause from spectators at the Fairy Glen to seeing the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo driving by, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

A few days afterwards at Edinburgh Castle, a couple said to me, “so you not got your dress on today?” Turns out they had been at the glen that day too and had watched on as we married!”

Top tip: “Make sure you have fun – it’s your wedding and you should be happy! You can’t please everyone, so make the choices that bring you joy.”
