“I wish someone had told me how challenging finding a venue was. It was definitely the hardest part, but once we secured our venue, Dunglass Estate, everything else fell into place. It ticked so many boxes for us: exclusive use, accommodation in the same place as our ceremony and reception, plus the church and grounds are just so breathtaking.
Having a Humanist celebrant meant our ceremony was incredibly personal – we wrote almost all of it ourselves. We also added small, silly details to embrace things we love, for example, we had our favourite film themes playing when we left the ceremony and entered the marquee for the reception. I chose Jurassic Park and Sam picked Star Wars.
Although we had a relatively sunny day, it was incredibly windy. This meant we had to lose some of the floral arrangements we’d planned for the church, but our florist Ruth was incredible and repurposed them in the marquee. Our photographer Sean also worked so hard to get us stunning photos despite the weather.
One of our highlights of the wedding planning process was making our own rings. Donna at Make Your Own Wedding Rings took us through every step, took photos throughout and then gave us a bottle of bubbly at the end to celebrate. It was an amazing experience.
We loved involving our family in the day. My brother played our ceremony music for us, accompanied by two of Sam’s uncles, and Sam’s aunt provided our wedding stationery. My grandmother passed away in 2015 and mum gave me her sapphire and diamond ring to be my something old and blue. It was also my dad’s birthday that day, so during the speeches we sang him happy birthday and had a cake brought out to him.”
Top tip: “Book a videographer. We left the decision until quite late in the planning process because of the cost, but it ended up being far more reasonable than expected and 100% worth every penny.”
