Celebrate marrying your one-in-a-million perfect match by helping people with blood cancer find their life-saving match via charity DKMS
After the year we’ve had, we anticipate more and more newlyweds using their favours as an opportunity to support the causes closest to their hearts. We can hardly think of a more worthy organisation than DKMS, a blood cancer charity that aims to give more people diagnosed with the disease and in need of a transplant a second chance at life.
Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Often their only hope of survival is a blood stem-cell transplant from a stranger and that’s where DKMS comes in. The charity aims to recruit as many potential donors to the blood stem-cell registry as possible.
Joining the register is easy – simply order a kit online, swab the inside of your cheeks and pop it back in the post. If you are a perfect match for someone, DKMS will get in touch to arrange a potential donation. Some 2,000 people in the UK are looking for a blood stem cell donor each year.
As they don’t charge individuals to sign up (even though it costs £40), fundraising is crucial – and that’s where its wedding favours come in. Guests will be able to scan a QR code to watch a heart-warming video of a young boy meeting his donor following his transplant, and keep a beautiful heart-shaped, metal pin badge as a memento of the day.
