“It took us about six months and several visits for us to decide on our venue. Since Laura is a student there, the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel was the natural choice for our ceremony. We spent longer looking for a reception venue that would suit both our guests and us.

Rowallan Castle boasts some fantastic architecture and actually has two castles – one newer Edwardian castle (for the reception) and one smaller ancient castle (for photographs). We chose to host our evening meal in the spacious, light-filled ballroom and then ceilidh the night away in the cosier dining room. This may seem like we did it backwards, but it worked well for our 40 guests.

Our families probably expected a very traditional wedding, but we thought it would be fun to go a bit bolder with colours – a bit of inspiration actually came from Dutch still life paintings. We brought in Natalie Mieszek and Laura Ryan, the fantastic duo from Lemonbox Studios, to help bring our ideas to life.

Everyone was fantastic in making everything come together. However, if we had to choose one supplier it would be Lisa Gaston from Floral Menagerie. We literally hired her a week and a half before the wedding – without her we might not have had flowers at all!

Our musical choices really made our day. The University of Glasgow Chapel Choir sang beautifully at our ceremony and had our family in tears. Later on, the talented Drams Ceilidh Band had everyone on their feet.”

Top tip: “I think we should have scheduled a later return bus back to Glasgow. Everyone was having so much fun – we still feel guilty for having their night earlier than they would have liked!”
