“Stephen proposed via a website. As a surprise, he’d booked us into a lovely hotel in Mont Saint-Michel when we were on holiday in France. We were revelling in the view from the balcony of our room when he asked if I wanted to see the hotel’s website. It turned out to be a replica Stephen had built with a section called ‘our fairytale’ (displaying our relationship in pictures) and ‘our future’ – which was his proposal! As I read, he got down on one knee, engagement ring in hand.
We booked a whole weekend of celebrations at Tullibole Castle. Owners Rhoderick and Alison gave us free reign to do whatever we wanted. It was perfect for the rustic, laid-back vibe I had in mind.
I am a huge Harry Potter fan and love fantasy and all things magical and mysterious. We had wooden table names created in the Harry Potter font as keepsake guest place settings, while the table plan I designed featured a Hogwarts image and scrolls detailing table names from the books. My brother-in-law baked Potter-themed cupcakes. We even had a cauldron wishing well and post-ceremony alcoholic shots in bottles designed to look like magic potions.
We both wanted an outdoors ceremony. About eight months before the wedding, Rhoderick informed us that he had a new ceremony location on the grounds, The Cathedral Tree. On the day it was the most magical ceremony setting. It was lit by a chandelier and fairy lights with sunflowers scattered around everywhere. Our guests surrounded us in a circle as we stood in the middle, so everyone felt part of it.
We had a very loose plan for the overall day which moved depending on weather and what was happening. Our suppliers and hosts were fantastic at keeping it all flowing. In fact, we have had so many compliments from guests on just how smoothly the day ran. There were no gaps or hanging around for them as there was always something to explore or enjoy.”
Top tip: “Do what makes you happy and stick to it – it’s not about anyone else. You’re getting to marry your best friend and that’s all that really matters.”
