“Our guests love to party, so a lot of our planning decisions were based around making sure everyone who came to celebrate would enjoy themselves. The venue we settled on – The Parsonage at Dunmore Park – could be hired exclusively. Not only were the house and gardens stunning and the marquee a blank canvas, our 145 guests and us had the place totally to ourselves.

Our wedding co-ordinator at The Parsonage was unavailable last-minute on the day of our wedding. Thankfully, Jan Gunn, the general manager of sister venue Glenbervie House, stepped into the role. Although Jan doesn’t work at The Parsonage often and had little knowledge of our wedding, she worked extremely hard to make sure everything was taken care of. We can’t thank her enough for all she did and how quickly she got up to speed with every detail.

We were able to have our ceremony outside as it was a lovely day. We worked with Andrew Smithsimmons of the Humanist Society Scotland on a brilliant, personal and memorable service. One of the highlights was hearing the three things we loved about each other that we’d written in secret ahead of the ceremony. It was emotional for both of us.

To get the evening reception underway, I organised an ice luge. It meant that a drink was waiting for our guests as they entered the marquee. A luge is an ice sculpture through which vodka is poured in a hole at the top, then exits, chilled, out the side into shot glasses. It was a fantastic party starter and everyone seemed to love it almost as much as Stuart, who it was a total surprise for.”

Top tip: “Make a spreadsheet with dates of when initial and final payments are due and make sure one person is in charge of this – version control is a must.”
