Venues | Òran Mór, Glasgow and Glasgow Botanic Gardens

“We looked at several venues, but it proved difficult to find ‘the one’ as we both agreed we disliked when the room was being turned around and there’s nothing for guests to do. Our venue choice was heavily influenced by smooth transitions during the day.

Òran Mór definitely had the wow factor, but as the guests would see the changeover from ceremony to dinner we decided to come up with an alternative location for the ceremony. When we decided have the formal proceedings at night, Ricky suggested Glasgow Botanic Gardens, which was available in the evenings for weddings. We had dinner first and then all 150 guests walked over to the glasshouse for our ceremony.

When everyone arrived at Òran Mór, Ricky and I hid upstairs listening to our guests try to figure out where the ceremony would take place, as the room was all set up for the reception. We walked into the room together before we were married and this made me feel so much less nervous knowing I didn’t have to do it alone.

We went for a 1920s theme that was all about beaded dresses, champagne and glamour. We loved planning every detail of the day: sourcing all the décor and trying to be as true to ourselves as possible. This meant no receiving line, no wedding cake, no speeches during dinner and lots of entertainment.

Our star supplier was Odd Box Photobooth. We’d been let down by our original photobooth supplier due to unexpected circumstances and the guys at Odd Box stepped in at the last minute. They were amazing! Their props are excellent and you also get vintage strip photos which are super cute.”

Top tip: “You can save a fortune by shopping around. We scoured pound shops and wholesalers for our candles and it was our biggest bargain.”
