“We got engaged officially on 8th September, but had been planning our surprise wedding since May. We didn’t want to spend thousands on one day – nothing against big weddings, but it just wasn’t for us.
We told our guests they were coming to our engagement dinner, and as part of the secret plan we’d hidden Greig’s brother and his girlfriend in our flat for four days as they’d flown back from Australia.
I can’t believe we pulled it off, but it was worth it to see everyone’s reactions when we walked in. Everyone was so emotional and the double whammy of his brother being there just made the day perfect.
We booked our honeymoon to Costa Rica first, and worked backwards from that. We actually left for Gatwick Airport straight from our venue. Our neighbour has a concierge service and gave us a wonderful deal.
The biggest bargain was my dress. I actually made a profit because I bought two dresses at the same time and resold one online and made around £900. Amazing!”
Top tip: “Be selfish. The surprise element was to eliminate stress from us and everyone loved it.”
