“We got engaged during a trip up north in March 2016. We are Historic Scotland members, and on this particular Saturday, Alasdair had arranged for us to visit three sites. At the final site, Spynie Castle, as I was reading information boards, Alasdair was on one knee with a beautiful heart-shaped engagement ring. I was delighted and accepted, of course!
We originally wanted separate venues for the ceremony and reception. However, when we visited Gleddoch, we loved the layout and options available. It then became important to us that our guests could arrive at one place, then relax and enjoy the day all under one roof.
After attending some previously, we were both set on having a Humanist ceremony. We appreciated the fact guests could laugh and cry along with us. Sandy Geddes from Independent Humanist Ceremonies was fantastic and the ideal celebrant for us thanks to his commanding voice and light-hearted nature.
We were keen to achieve a traditional and classic look to our wedding. Most of all, we wanted our guests to feel comfortable and an important part of the day.
Our favourite wedding detail has to be our cat, Lucy. We both love cats and wanted to find a way of including her, so she wore a ‘Cat of Honour’ bandana! You’ll also spot her in icing hidden within the flowers of our cake.
Our first dance was the only secret we managed to keep between us. We worked with our friend, Donna, to choreograph our dance. Our song is ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams, but we felt it was right to start with a slower number, so we chose ‘Unchained Melody’ by The Righteous Brothers. Our band played a minute and a half of this before bursting into Pharrell to kick off the party. Alasdair isn’t a keen dancer so our guests were very impressed with his moves.”
Top tip: “Ask your photographer to shoot some of your photographs in portrait. It makes framing special photos much easier”
