“As MD of wedding caterer The Orde Food Company, Justin has worked at lots of different venues in the Borders, meaning he had a pretty good idea of what location might suit us both. Wedderburn Barns was one of his favourites as it is essentially a blank vavas; he had seen it looking rustic, vintage and traditional, so we knew we could make it work for our wedding.
The meaningful and reflective ceremony was by far my favourite part of the day. It was full of songs and laughter and all very ‘us’. Our celebrant was the brilliant Tom Hudson from the Humanist Society Scotland.
We wanted a relaxed, contemporary feeling to the look and atmosphere of the wedding. We gave Lindsey Hunter at Get Knotted an ‘outside inside’ brief and she excelled, mixing up geometric shapes with soft natural textures.
Justin’s friend Charlie created two special works of art for the walls of the barns depicting Borders landmark Peniel Heugh where we got engaged and Cathedral Peak in South Africa where we had recently visited. I thought they looked so cool and made the barns look modern and unique.
Food was obviously the most important element for Justin! We had The Orde Food Company cater (of course!) and designed a bespoke menu that shared the best of the Borders with our guests. Justin got a chance to experience life as a client after catering for so many weddings in the past.
I ended up wearing my sister’s wedding dress. I’d bought a Maggie Sottero dress in a sample sale in Lancaster. It was beautiful, but through the fitting process, I felt less and less like myself and that the dress was wearing me. When I got it home, my sister could tell I wasn’t happy, so suggested I wear hers. I’m so glad I did, as I felt lovely wearing it, and it was my something borrowed in the bag.”
Top tip: “Our biggest bargain was our stationery. I designed it all on canva.com and had a local printer output it. They looked professional, so I was really proud to send out the invitations and display the menus and escort cards.”
