“Having been together for over eight years prior to our engagement, we were fairly confident we knew what type of wedding we were aiming for, and this made most big decisions pretty straightforward. Iain and I are both teachers, so we were set on a summer wedding as this allowed us to have six weeks off afterwards. We spent three travelling around Scotland and finished with a trip to Barcelona.
There was really no other place I imagined saying ‘I do’ than the beautiful chapel in our local village of Houston. We only viewed one venue for our reception: Piersland House Hotel. We were fascinated by all the quirky features and loved the intimacy of the main dining room.
We’ve been to a number of weddings during our eight years together, and took inspiration from each and every one. We didn’t want to detract too much from the natural beauty of the venue we had both fallen in love with, so kept things simplistic with lots of white and leafy greens. We had our hearts set on big white balloons, and had almost given up on the idea when we saw quotes from various suppliers. Luckily, a company called Balloons Around Scotland came to our rescue, as long as we sourced weights that could hold the balloons down. Searching online wasn’t bringing up much, but when we were out for a walk one day we literally stumbled across the solution! One heavy bag later, we had our rock weights ready to go.
Our homemade gin favours were a labour of love. Taste testing occurred regularly just to be sure the sugar had dissolved and that the fruit had infused successfully. We only wish we had warned our guests that it required a mixer…
Due to the variety of dietary requirements on the Macleod side of the family, getting one cake to meet everyone’s needs was a logistical impossibility. We were delighted to discover Three Sisters Bake in the village where Kirsten grew up; they created an entire cake table that could accommodate all of the specifications and at an amazing price.”
Top tip: “Get a piece of cake – we forgot!”
