“We decided on the theme of our wedding first. We already knew we wanted to get married in December so using a palette of red, green and cream, and stag’s heads as a recurring motif tied in beautifully. We both love Christmas and wanted to create a relaxed country vibe. These were the key inspirations for styling our big day.

Thomas is a keen golfer so we decided to view some venues in St Andrews. When we stepped into Fairmont St Andrews, its stunning location and breathtaking atrium sealed the deal for us. I’m religious but Tom’s family aren’t, so we chose a Church of Scotland reverend for our service. This meant we could compromise and get married in the hotel, whilst still having a faith-based ceremony.

I made most of the decorations myself. As well as an arch for the top of the aisle – which doubled as a backdrop for photos in the evening – I also worked on all the stationery and table decorations. Tom and I researched a lot prior to the wedding and Pinterest was a great help when planning.

My favourite wedding detail was a letter I attached to my bouquet before I threw it. It wished the girl who caught it good luck with her own special day. My maid of honour made our cake. It was decorated with ivy, berries and pine cones and was a red sponge flavoured with essence of mulled wine. Amazing is the only way to describe it!

It only took me three days to find my wedding dress. I visited three shops, but I fell in love with a Sassi Holford gown from Charlotte Grace in Doune. Tom originally proposed with a ring that belonged to his granny and I wore this around my neck on the day. The rest of my accessories and outfit were all sourced online. My shoes cost just £42 and I had our names stencilled onto the soles as a secret finishing touch.”

Top tip: “Invest in photos as they last forever. And make things if you can – it makes the day so personal.”
