“This photo was taken shortly after the ceremony and was the first moment Chris and Mel had to just stop and take in the incredible feeling of being husband and wife. Little moments like these, in beautiful settings like this, are our favourite kind of picture.” Christina Golian, Elemental Photography

“We won our wedding in a competition. It was through the Scottish wedding blog, We Fell in Love. I didn’t even tell Chris I had entered as I never thought we’d even make it to the final, let alone win!

Hopetoun House was the venue chosen for the competition winners. Its impressiveness and outstanding team took my breath away. We wanted a wedding that was warm, rustic, homely and fun. As I’m Australian, we tried to personalise things to play on a good mix of Aussie/Scottish quirks, to make our day unique and memorable, and to get people talking.

We made our own favours – jam jars with Aussie and Scottish sweets for the girls, and personalised stubby-holders with sweets for the guys. My favourite wedding detail has to be the amazing eucalyptus gum tree feature made by Planet Flowers. It cascaded around and down the spiral staircase. They decorated it with about a hundred clip-on koalas that my dad had sent over. I never knew you could create such amazing and unique things with flowers.

My dad wasn’t able to make the day due to his health, but he gave me a small pin that was important to him to keep close to me on the day. I had a wee pocket sewn into my Alan Hannah dress from Rachel Scott Couture to keep it in.

Top tip: Build in some extra time to your plan for the morning of the wedding in case there are hiccups. I was almost an hour late as both my hairdresser and makeup artist were unwell. I was still delighted with the results, but I wouldn’t have been late if I’d left more time. And if you have no hiccups, that spare hour won’t go to waste – there’s always something needing doing, even if it’s just refilling a glass or a hip flask!”
