“Our wedding was a mixture of vintage, traditional and geek. Our tables were themed around some of our favourite films, TV series and reads such as Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Game of Thrones. I used Photoshop to alter movie posters and book covers to use for the table plan. I themed each table centre to match, too, with sayings on the back and appropriate fonts and pictures.
We indulged our love of Star Wars in a couple of ways: we sourced little wooden figures of Han Solo and Princess Leia to top our M&S cake (that we’d decorated ourselves with spray-painted Dr. Oetker chocolate stars) and during one of the two best mens’ speeches, I was presented with an Empire Strikes Back annual from Paul’s school days – it was a personal highlight among a day of many!
One of my attempts at wedding DIY wasn’t so successful. I’m half-Dutch, so to honour this side of the family, I tried to grow bulbs for the tables instead of buying flowers. I had a trial run the year before the wedding and noted down the planting and flowering times. So far so good…but second year around they didn’t flower at all. Thank heavens for the garden centre at Rouken Glen Park where back-ups were purchased.
Our gorgeous venue, WEST on the Green in Glasgow, didn’t need much decoration. It was the first venue we visited and we fell for it hook, line and sinker. Any other venue we looked at afterwards just couldn’t compete.
The pinnacle of the day was making a commitment to someone I love. I also cherished the amount of affection I felt from all the guests who attended. My maid of honour’s speech moved me to tears – best friends really do make the best speeches.
My only slight regret? Spending too much time with a small group of people and not taking enough time to see all the people who came to join us from afar. The day flew by so quickly and we hadn’t fully appreciated how short time would feel on the day itself.”
Top tip: “Always have a little bit extra money beyond what you budget for. There will always be a cost that you have not factored in, even if that’s simply stamps for invitations.”
