“We have known for several years where and when we wanted to get married: The Hermitage in October. As a child, I used to holiday in Perthshire with my family and visited this National Trust for Scotland area for walks. Tom and I have also spent time there and fell in love with it. The unexpected passing of my mum in 2013 cemented the special nature of The Hermitage for us.

The thought of a room full of people looking at us sent shivers down our spines, so we decided to keep our wedding small and intimate with close family only. In total we had just seven guests: Tom’s mum, dad and three sisters and my dad and sister.

I needed convincing by my sister to go wedding dress shopping! I turned up in old jeans and Converse for my appointment at Anne Priscilla Bridal and they just ‘got’ me and the vintage look we had planned for the day.

Our humanist ceremony was conducted by the brilliant Alison Duffy who we found online. In a twist of fate, it turned out she used to work with Tom’s mum in years gone by! We felt so comfortable with her.

The wedding was everything we expected and hoped for – and more. I had a lovely feeling that my mum was there with us during the ceremony. I wore a vintage brooch on my dress that she’d given to me, along with an heirloom bracelet that was a gift from Tom’s mum.

All the catering was done by our family. Gill (Tom’s sister) made the vegan canapés; Moira (Tom’s mum) created a vegan feast, while my wonderful sister Sian made three-tier vegan cake! She also made all the decorations for the venue.

After the ceremony we had a few drinks at the local pub. Later on back at the house, we danced and sang our way through the evening. Everyone sang, played an instrument or read a poem.

Top tip: Be yourself and have a day that reflects you as a couple.”
