“We were only engaged for 11 months. We had been together for seven years when Sandy proposed so we didn’t want to have a long engagement. We wanted our wedding to be authentic, intimate and relaxed, so we thought a farm would be perfect. I’d heard of Bogbain before and had an inkling it would be the one. It’s a very special place.
We wanted lots of personal touches at our big day. Aside from the bouquets and buttonholes, I created all of the floral displays and Sandy made all of the stationery. He also gave me lots of lovely gifts to open in the morning with personalised messages: slippers so I wouldn’t get cold feet, a watch to get there in time and a lovely heart bracelet as I’d always have his heart.
I was so nervous about walking down the aisle, but somebody said to me when the doors open just to look for Sandy and you’ll be fine. I did and it was the only thing that kept me moving! It can be scary when everyone is looking at you, but seeing him standing there smiling kept me focused.
For me, the smaller the company, the better the service so it was important to me that we worked with as many local independent companies as we could. My star supplier was Elizabeth Wallace Bridal Alterations, Liz walked me through every step and I had total trust in her.
Our food was no frills but delicious – mac ‘n cheese and sausage and mash. We had fresh cream in our cake so we served that up for dessert. It tied in perfectly with the relaxed vibe we wanted for the day.”
Top tip: “Set yourself a deadline of around two weeks before the wedding and if something isn’t done by then, it doesn’t matter. You won’t notice the little things on the day as you’ll be swept up in the wave of emotions.”
