“We both knew straight away that we wanted all of our friends and family there to celebrate with us – it wasn’t going to be a quiet one! Airth Castle was the ideal venue for both ceremony and reception. We liked the fact that we could get married in the castle and that our guests wouldn’t have to travel far to get to the reception.

We had a good idea of what we wanted the day to be like and our vision didn’t really change. Ross and I were both pretty laid-back which I think made it so much more enjoyable to plan! I gleaned loads of inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram and magazines.

We elected to have a humanist ceremony. The style was very personal: we got to select what we wanted to include and wrote our own vows, assisted by our celebrant, Iain Whitelaw. We couldn’t recommend him enough. There were so many lovely comments from guests telling us how brilliant they thought both ceremony and celebrant were.

I was very nervous about walking down the aisle but, in the end, it was one of the highlights. It was amazing to see all the happy faces, with Ross’s at the end. He felt very emotional when he saw me, which took him by surprise. Getting piped from the castle to the hotel after the ceremony with all our guests following behind us is also a fond memory.

I was surprised by how relaxed I felt. I had heard so many stories about nerves, but I was just so excited and elated from start to finish. Ross’s favourite part of the day was the reception. We enjoyed chatting to all our guests and ceilidh dancing with everyone!”

Top tip: “I’d also urge couples not to let planning take over. We spent most weekends in the lead-up to the event organising and making things. It was busy, but having said that, so worth it.”
