“The first planning decision we made was to look for a venue that was a bit different. We visited barns, farmhouses and a big country house before choosing Boturich Castle. The gorgeous views over Loch Lomond really impressed us, but most importantly, dogs were allowed and this was a must so we could bring our wee Hamish along!
We’re both very big rugby fans and Graeme plays for his local team, Garnock Rugby Club. We let this influence the styling of our day with ticket-inspired stationery, rugby ball centrepieces, a themed reading at our ceremony and a ball for everyone to sign instead of a guest book.
Around six weeks before the wedding I approached our best men Stuart and Jamie and asked if they would assemble some of the rugby boys and have a go at doing the haka. They put so much effort in, practicing two or three times a week to make sure they got it right out of respect for New Zealand culture. At the end of the speeches, Stuart and Jamie started the chanting and the rest of them jumped up and joined in. It ended up going viral on social media and was even on the news in New Zealand!
One of my favourite wedding details was the button bouquet my mum made for me. She’s very talented and patient, so she created a stunning bouquet from a kitchen sieve and about 300 buttons. It meant so much that she’d taken the time to create this unique addition to our special day.
Our photographer Stevie Weir was out of this world. He knew exactly where to capture the best photos and showed some of the photos from earlier in the day at the evening reception – it was a great touch.”
Top tip: “There are so many wedding traditions and ‘rules’ that people think they have to follow but do it your way. We spent a lot of time making our wedding personal to us and everyone just loved it.”
