“We got engaged in September 2016 on a bridge on the Glasgow Vet School grounds, where I graduated from and now work. I was totally surprised and almost disappointed that it wasn’t in Disney World (where we were heading a few weeks later).
Craig agreed to keep it a secret to allow us to stage the perfect proposal in Disney World, but when we arrived back at our flat, friends and family were waiting for a surprise party. It was an amazing night and it turns out Craig knows me better than I know myself.
Glasgow University Chapel was the obvious choice for our ceremony, with its special connection to my studies, life and engagement – not to mention its beauty. Airth Castle fitted the bill for the castle reception we wanted, and its large capacity meant we didn’t need to rely on a marquee for our 180 all-day guests.
The unofficial theme was Disney. There were cocktails, stationery, centrepieces and table names, plus my cape and princess dress, all inspired by different films and characters.
My closest friend is male, so I made him my best man and instead of doing a speech, he made a video of himself dressed up as me singing an alternative version of ‘Belle’ from Beauty and the Beast (you can watch it here). It started at my old job in Lancashire but ended up in my current workplace in Glasgow. Everyone loved it and he got a standing ovation!
All my suppliers were fantastic, but special mention must go to Splendid Gentlemen. I have never seen such a busy dancefloor and they even went against their usual style and covered ‘Tale as Old as Time’ for us.”
Top tip: Don’t worry about offending people by not inviting them or stress about where to sit them. Do what you want – it’s your day and no one else’s.”
