Given we live and work in Scotland, we decided on a traditional Scottish castle wedding with a massive party. It’s what we do best! Tie the Knot Scotland was our bible for the wedding venue search.

It was also important to us that the venue offered a Scottish menu of seafood and game, that it had tartan carpets and turrets (non-negotiable) and that would allow our party to go on to the early hours. Barony Castle ticked all the boxes, and had fairytale grounds.

Our theme was rustic and Scottish. With a lot of guests travelling from America and Italy, we hadn’t put much thought to the fact that many of our traditions – piper, ceilidh, kilts and finishing the night with Loch Lomond, to name a few – would make for a unique experience.

We also tied in Italian influences, so our table names were Latin words that describe the meaning of love. We had Italian almond confetti as favours (coloured purple to fit our theme) and rum baba as a dessert after our Scottish-themed starter and main.

On my 30th birthday, my parents presented me with a card that my grandmother had written to me when I was born. She gifted me her lace wedding veil that in turn had been passed down to her through two generations.

My grandmother was married during the war and had worn the veil in a church that had no roof after being bombed the day before their wedding. She is no longer with us, so it was a very special part of my day, and I also placed a photo of her wearing the veil next to my guestbook.”

Top tip: “Go to your dress fitting before investing in expensive shoes. By the time I settled on a pair at the right height I had been through four pairs, two of which I couldn’t return (thank god for eBay).”
