“We’re from the US, so wanted to do something different to what you’d experience in America. A castle wedding seemed like it would be fun and exciting, so that’s what we decided to go for. Culzean Castle is visually stunning, held the number of guests we’d anticipated and didn’t require having to travel too far from a major city.

We had 40 guests attend everything – in the US, everyone is invited to all parts of the day so we were really confused when people kept asking how many people we had for the day and night.

We didn’t feel the need to add much to the castle’s interiors, which were classy and very vintage. We wanted to embrace the culture and customs of Scotland (including kilts!). Travel also became a bit of a theme, with our stationery, favours and guest book all being a little nod to us both working in aviation.

My mum never dances, so seeing her take part in the ceilidh really filled me with joy. She was so happy and carefree. Another moment that nearly ruined my makeup with tears of laughter was seeing one of our groomsmen throw a bridesmaid over his shoulder to carry her across the lawn for photos – they’d only met each other the day before!

I found out my hairstylist was moving to New York about a month before the wedding, and my photographer Betty helped me find Anne Marie of AMM Hair and Makeup team last minute. She was a lifesaver and somehow styled my hair exactly how I wanted with no trial beforehand.”

Top tip: “I really wish I’d listened to all the blogs that advised getting a wedding planner or having a very involved maid of honour. I was so focused on making the day amazing for my guests, I didn’t spend enough time thinking about enjoying it myself. In the end, there was no reason to be stressed because the whole weekend was a blast.”
