“The first decision we made was choosing the time of year we wanted to get married. I adore Christmas as I think it’s such a magical and family-centred time of year. We loved the idea of having a cosy winter wedding with roaring log fires and gorgeous Christmas trees.
We fell in love with the Brig O’ Doon in Alloway. It has a lovely traditional Scottish feel and is the setting for the climax of Robert Burn’s most famous poem, ‘Tam o’ Shanter’. The ballroom had a grand Christmas tree in front of the bay window, which was an impressive focal point in the room. Getting married in Scotland at any time of year is always a risk weather-wise, but we were happy to take our chances as the venue guaranteed fantastic photographs inside and out.
There were so many elements we thought about to make the day feel special and personal to us. Of particular importance was a Humanist ceremony, conducted by Suzanne Teed. Suzanne put all the information we provided her about our relationship, proposal and bridal party in such a way that it flowed beautifully.
An unexpected moment for Kevin was a performance from pipe and drum band Sticks ‘n’ Kicks during our reception. They were a great surprise and kept everyone in the party mood whilst the band took a break.
The best thing about the day was having all our nearest and dearest there in one room. We took a moment during the meal to look around and be thankful for that. It’s a pretty special thing to have everyone you love assembled together.”
Top tip: “If friends or family have talents and are willing to offer them to you then graciously accept. It makes for a much more personalised day and certainly helps when you have so many other costs to outlay.”
