“Our venue was the first decision we made. Having both grown up in Scotland, but now living in England with our jobs, we knew we had to pick a Scottish venue.

My dream was always to have people join us from the night before, have the wedding and then celebrate Hogmanay the day after together. Mar Hall was the perfect place for this, and we pretty much took over the whole hotel!

Family is so important to me, so the most important thing was that all our friends and family were there to celebrate with us and that everyone had a great time.

We did a hand-hold around the door – I had seen something similar on Pinterest and thought it was a great idea because I didn’t want to do a first look. This was such a nice moment as it was a couple of minutes before the ceremony and the wee hand squeeze was perfect for putting all my nerves at rest.

We are very lucky because Jonny races for Aston Martin, so we got some beautiful wedding cars. One of his best men was his Aston Martin Racing teammate and he very kindly sourced a classic DB5 (which Jonny insisted on cleaning with the train of my dress).

I mostly used Instagram for inspiration, and Pinterest was great too. I got the idea for tartan blankets for bridesmaids to keep warm from Tie the Knot Scotland!

I had always wanted all white flowers with some wintery foliage, and this tied in perfectly with the Garden Pavillion at Mar Hall. Harry and Meghan’s wedding was the inspiration behind the arch, albeit a bit smaller than theirs. I remember messaging my florist the day of the royal wedding and saying “I need an arch!”.

I had watched a vlog by Lydia Millen and she mentioned having a wedding scent – I am so glad I did this. We bought Jo Malone London’s Pomegranate Noir candles and dotted them around the room on the tables and down the aisle, and my bridesmaids wore that perfume too. Whenever I smell it I am transported straight back to the big day.

The fireworks were such a great surprise for everyone, including Jonny as I didn’t tell him. They were just perfect with the time of year and we had such a clear night, it was amazing.”

Top tip: “The one thing I realised whilst wedding planning is that you see lots of things on social media and online, but it’s so important to remember that 90% of your guests are not following all the wedding pages you are so it will be new to them.”
