“Jie and I had been together for over three years when we got engaged. The setting was Christmas morning 2018 with a ring hidden among the presents, so it couldn’t have been any more perfect.

We were fortunate that the Covid pandemic didn’t directly affect our wedding plans. Instead, it encouraged us to get married sooner rather than later due to how things panned out.

We decided to have a small, intimate wedding with plans to host a bigger reception later in 2022. Our guestlist was 25.

We hosted our ceremony at 23 Montrose Street at Glasgow City Chambers. Assistant Registrar Antonio Reilly led proceedings in front of our assembled nearest and dearest. We kept things straightforward and decided not do our own vows as, for us, it felt like unnecessary added pressure. Our mums walked us down the aisle and our dads signed the register.

Afterwards, we headed across the Merchant City to The Corinthian Club. Our co-ordinator Jillian Kerr was a superstar and provided lots of guidance in the run-up, as well as assistance on the day. Her and the team helped us tailor-make a package to suit our needs.

Our main inspiration was keeping things as family-oriented and unfussy as we could. We aimed to stay away from too much glamour and bling, and focus on creating an intimate, convivial atmosphere.

Once we’d booked our area for dinner at The Corinthian, ideas began to flow. Jie has a creative mind, so he suggested lots of candlelight with eucalyptus and fern decor which suited the carved wood in the room. It all came together beautifully.

We handmade our wax seals for our invitations with a crest logo that we had designed especially for our stationery. We also printed the crest on our favours and had a bespoke balloon arch made, also featuring the monogram.

We are proud cat-parents to three kitties, so wanted to incorporate them into our day somehow. We named each of our three tables after them and had a custom cake topper made with their silhouettes. All these touches meant our day represented our personalities.

Three out of four of our grandparents are sadly no longer with us. We still felt their presence as we had pictures of them placed on our table for dinner.

The best men’s speeches were the optimum mix of hilarious, heart-warming and emotional. Jie also made a speech to thank everyone for attending. He spoke about family and let all our friends know that we are also family – there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

The most important factor when it came photography was to find someone we were both comfortable with. We wanted to capture ‘moments’ rather than traditional staged photos. Gary James was on the same page from the outset and suggested some great options. We felt we were in safe hands. After chatting, we discovered we had quite a lot in common with him, so he slotted in wonderfully to the family feel of our day.

We wouldn’t change a single thing about our wee wedding. We now are even more excited for our reception party! We are saving our first dance for our follow-up party, but it’ll be to the song we walked down the aisle to: Nathan Sykes ft. Ariana Grande’s Over and Over Again.”
