“I work in the events industry, so I’ve seen a lot of venues. I’d had my eye on Killearn Village Hall for a while and, after visiting the place and meeting with Sheena, its fantastic wedding co-ordinator, we got the date in the diary. It’s a location that couples can really put their own stamp on.
All our decor was down to my creative mum and sister. We had floral hoops on the walls; candlesticks and flowers in mini vases on the tables; ribbon garlands on our chairs; and crates filled with lemons and rosemary (as a nod to our Amalfi coast engagement) for our guestbook table. The hall looked gorgeous.
We were married by the Very Reverend Kelvin Holdsworth at St Mary’s Cathedral on Great Western Road. My mum and dad tied the knot there in 1987 and Anton’s grandmother played organ in the cathedral back in the 1940s, meaning it had a lovely family link for both of us. Walking in with my dad and seeing all of our family and friends and Anton waiting at the end of the aisle was a moment I’ll treasure forever.
Our reception band, Pulse, went down a storm. The talented bunch of performers ensured the dancefloor was full all night. They even managed a couple of requests including September by Earth, Wind & Fire instead of the usual Loch Lomond to close the night.
We are fans of a Sunday dinner with family, so that heavily influenced our food. Three Sisters Bake made everything family-style for sharing, so people had the opportunity to chat to each other and enjoy a delicious meal. We had antipasti to start, beef wellington and salmon for main course and a cake table for dessert. No surprise that the latter was a big hit with guests.
La Novia was the final shop I visited on a weekend of dress-shopping in Edinburgh. After trying a couple of styles, I tried on the dress and absolutely fell in love with it. Owner Liliana was such a great help with putting everything together. I added a lace bolero and cathedral-length veil. It all felt amazing to wear on the day.”
Top tip: “Have a chat to your venue’s wedding co-ordinator and heed their advice; they will be ideally placed to advise you on how to reach your vision, whilst being realistic with the venue’s capabilities within budget. Sheena at Killearn Village Hall was invaluable in that regard.”
