Simons Studios photography wedding at Cornhill Castle bride and groom

“We booked our wedding in April 2018 for a date in August 2020, but we all know how that turned out with the pandemic. We rescheduled for April 2021, but something didn’t feel right quite right, so we finally settled on Easter Sunday last year – and it was perfect. We had four years of planning, three dates, two lockdowns, and then one day!

We visited Cornhill on a beautiful sunny day and were sold the minute we saw it. The drive up to the castle always gives me butterflies. We loved the idea of a bar in the main ballroom so the party could continue and we also really wanted to ensure there was accommodation at or near the venue that suited every budget.

The venue team were lovely and really put my mind at ease. They were just so understanding, and I felt they cared about us. In fact, I was so chilled on the morning of the wedding that I even managed to take a nap!

We had a lovely room which seven of us stayed in on the eve of the wedding, before the makeup artist and hairdressers joined us. We took photos in the honeymoon suite before I had a ‘final look’ with my dad, which was very emotional.

I walked down the aisle to ‘The Skye Boat Song’ – it was so meaningful as my family originally hail from the Isle of Skye.

Ross and I had a sweetheart table as one thing people always seem to say is make sure you spend time together. We really enjoyed this and it also meant that our guests were more likely to come up to our table and chat. I think one person actually pulled a chair up at one point.

One thing I really recommend was the next morning we had breakfast with all of our guests who stayed at Cornhill. It was great to catch up with everyone in the morning on anything that happened the day before.

The speeches were lovely, my dad’s was so nice and you could tell he was really proud of us and was happy to welcome Ross into our family. Ross is typically quiet (when he’s not had a drink) but the full room was taken by surprise at how confident and well he spoke, his speech was amazing and he was his usual funny self.

We had The Little Prosecco Bar, a little yellow truck that served prosecco via ‘tap’ and also beer for our guests. They had a little gin trolley too to spice up the prosecco. It was really cool because the kids could sit in it and guests took shots pulling their drinks.

Like many brides, I had a Pinterest board with many ideas and this evolved over time. I recommend not rushing into any themes right away. Once we booked the venue we took stock of the colours and Cornhill has a beautiful gold ballroom and lovely gold Chiavari chairs. We went for golds and gold acrylic for our wedding invites and all stationery and greens and whites for the flowers.

Our dress code on the invite was ‘Fabulous’ and the day was a total party vibe – quite a few guests said it was one of the best weddings they’d ever been to!

Ross and I were so ready to get married as we’d waited so long. You can hear in our video someone saying how much we were smiling during the day!”

Top tip: “A lot of people don’t say to sweat the small stuff, but I think the small details set your wedding apart from others. Also, get pictures with your parents if you are lucky enough to have them, I wish I had more but we were too busy enjoying the day!”
