“Daryl and I met while on secondment at work and spent eight years together before he popped the question on holiday in Florence. We were looking down onto the Piazza Della Repubblica, listening to street musicians playing Perfect by Ed Sheeran, when Daryl got down on one knee – I couldn’t believe it! Even though we had been a couple for so long, I had absolutely no inkling that he was planning to propose.

We are both practising Catholics, so chose the majestic St Andrew’s RC Cathedral in Glasgow for our ceremony. Fr. Joe Millar is a family friend and having him celebrate our wedding mass was special.

We gave ourselves nine months to plan everything – a completely doable time frame. I had a spreadsheet to track costs and also used the Bridebook app to make sure I didn’t forget anything major. I would suggest other couples accept offers of help in the days immediately before the wedding. We didn’t, so doing it all ourselves meant some extremely early mornings and late nights.

We got married on a Thursday. With a lot of our friends and family having to take time off work specially, we really wanted to put on an unforgettable party as a token of our appreciation. Chris Cruickshank played saxophone for two hours in the blistering heat, kicking off our drinks reception in style, then – during the meal – we sneakily lined up the Singing Servers to entertain. Our guests loved them!

My dad has an ice-cream van so, in tribute, we offered personalised, filled sweetie bags as one of our favours. Consequently, no-one got peckish during the speeches. We also treated the ladies to mini bottles of Bottega Rose, while the fellas got Havana Especial rum miniatures.

I cherish the memories I have of my gran on the day. A few months before the wedding, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her bowel and given only a few weeks to live. The specialists obviously doubted my gran’s willpower, as she was absolutely determined to see me get married!

Even though she didn’t feel great, she made it to the wedding – and looked fabulous. It meant the world to me to have her there. Sadly, she passed away in November, but having a special photo (below) brings me solace.”

Top tip: “I’d wholeheartedly recommend the services of Don’t Stress the Dress. Lindsey arrived at 6:30am and got straight to work steaming dresses, getting everyone ready and making sure the morning ran smoothly. There was no drama; the whole wedding party was relaxed and everything ran on time thanks to her.”
