We visit The Vu in Bathgate to explore its Waterlily and Oasis wedding spaces, inclusive packages, accommodation and countryside setting – and find out what couples actually get for their money

There’s no getting around the fact that a wedding can be one of life’s bigger financial outlays. Unless your budget is bottomless, knowing exactly what your money is buying matters.

That’s something The Vu in Bathgate is keen to make straightforward.

Its wedding packages bring together many of the costs couples would otherwise have to arrange separately, including venue hire, a wedding coordinator and toastmaster, canapés, a three-course meal, evening buffet, selected drinks, table linen, ceremony decor, centrepieces, stationery, overnight accommodation for the newlyweds and even two wedding cars.

“A host of upgrades is available too,” says wedding coordinator Bernadette Carr.

“The main additional elements couples marrying here might need to budget for are their outfits, celebrant, photographer, cake, entertainment, flowers and any additional decor.”

For couples trying to establish what a wedding will actually cost, it’s a refreshingly clear starting point.

What is The Vu wedding venue like?

Bernadette is well placed to show me around: she’s worked here for 13 years and, alongside similarly long-standing colleagues Amy and Victoria, helps couples book and plan their weddings before handing everything over to the on-the-day coordination team.

That experience matters because this family-owned West Lothian wedding venue can host two weddings a day during peak season across its two immaculately maintained, principal wedding spaces.

  • The Waterlily is a striking contemporary glass building sitting on a reservoir with 270-degree views.
  • The Oasis is a modern event space with colour-changing lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Can The Vu host two weddings at once?

Yes it can and one of the first questions some couples will have might be, “Will you bump into the other wedding?”

In short: no. Different start and finish times, soundproofing and carefully managed guest movements keep the celebrations separate.

“We also have staff stationed at the entrance to direct guests to the correct destination,” Bernadette explains.

  • An Oasis wedding begins at 1pm, with the ceremony and drinks reception in the Waterlily before guests move to the Oasis for dinner and dancing.
  • A Waterlily wedding starts at 3.30pm. After the ceremony, guests move to the Vu Suite for drinks while the Waterlily is transformed for dinner and the evening reception.
  • Exclusive use is available for anyone who would prefer to have the whole site to themselves.

What is the Waterlily at The Vu like?

All wedding ceremonies at The Vu take place in the Waterlily – capacity 150 for ceremony; 120 for dinner; 140 for party.

Its location beside Ballencrieff Reservoir is the obvious draw. Glass surrounds much of the space, so the views become part of the ceremony rather than simply something guests see afterwards.

For Oasis-package weddings, the Waterlily is used for the ceremony and drinks reception before everyone moves across to the Oasis.

For Waterlily-package weddings, it accommodates the ceremony first and then dinner and dancing once the room has been reset (the drinks reception is hosted in the Vu Suite while this happens).

What is the Oasis at The Vu like?

The Oasis can seat up to 144 guests as standard, with capacity for 200 when booked on an exclusive-use basis, and can accommodate up to 220 for an evening reception.

Floor-to-ceiling windows maintain the countryside connection during the day, while the lighting allows the room to take on a different atmosphere after dinner.

What are the grounds like for wedding photographs?

One of The Vu’s strengths is that it feels considerably more rural than its location suggests.

Bathgate makes it easily accessible from across Scotland’s central belt, but the venue sits among farmland in an elevated, west-facing position overlooking the surrounding West Lothian countryside.

When the weather plays ball, the sun sets behind the hills – extremely handy for photographers chasing golden-hour portraits without taking couples away from their guests.

There are plenty of other options too, including the grounds, bandstand and The Vu’s recognisable jetty beside the reservoir.

What is the wedding food like at The Vu?

Wedding food here is deliberately crowd-pleasing. Instead of asking every guest to pre-order their meal weeks in advance, couples choose two starter and two main-course options, and guests make their final selection on the day.

Think black pudding bonbons or leek-and-potato soup, followed by steak pie or chicken supreme with whisky sauce, then a trio of desserts.

Packages also include canapés, an evening buffet and selected drinks, with additional drinks options available.

It fits with the overall approach: plenty is dealt with as standard, but couples can upgrade the elements that matter most to them.

What accommodation is available at The Vu?

This is another area where The Vu has invested significantly.

  • The Hoose sleeps eight and is particularly well suited to getting ready on the wedding morning
  • Next door, the Cottage sleeps four.

Greener, more affordable weddings at The Vu

I don’t manage to get inside either – both are occupied during my visit – but behind the venues are another 18 accommodation options.

The luxury Snugs are compact Scandi-style wooden pods dotted across the hillside, each with a king-size bed, en-suite bathroom, hanging space, fridge, microwave, kettle and hairdryer.

They give guests the option of staying within walking distance of the wedding rather than arranging transport elsewhere at the end of the night.

Then there are two Canadian log cabins reserved for newlyweds, and I get the pleasure of staying in one for the night.

What are The Vu’s honeymoon log cabins like?

The rustic timber exterior doesn’t quite prepare me for what’s inside. There’s a bright open-plan sleeping and living space, a large picture window, plush bedding and a compact kitchen area.

Then there’s the bathroom – which is enormous. A freestanding bath sits alongside twin basins and two wet-room-style showers, making this feel considerably more luxurious than the word “cabin” might suggest.

Guests can pre-order filled morning rolls or a full Scottish breakfast for delivery to their accommodation the following morning.

What are the benefits of getting married at The Vu?

This is a popular West Lothian purpose-built wedding venue and it's clear to see why – its modern spaces, clearly defined packages and substantial list of inclusions make planning feel practical, but the reservoir, countryside and accommodation stop the experience feeling purely functional.

For couples trying to balance budget, logistics and the wedding they actually want, that combination could make a lot of sense.
