“Kip and I met when we were working as costumed tour guides at The Real Mary King’s Close. We got engaged on our 8th anniversary, when Kip arranged with the management to visit the site before it opened to the public – as we walked up it gradually dawned on me where we were going and why it was happening!

Because we met in the Old Town, it was important for us to get married there too. We set our hearts on having our ceremony in Lothian Chambers because it’s absolutely beautiful inside. For our reception, we decided on the Thomas Morton Hall in Leith Theatre. It’s a beautiful early 1930s building with lots of character, plus it’s completely DIY which meant we got to have our day exactly as we wanted.

We brewed our own beer to give our guests as wedding favours. Kip is studying brewing at university, and we both enjoy drinking it, so it seemed like a natural choice. Kip’s favourite style is a porter, so he led on the recipe and I designed the label. We were particularly proud of the name – ‘Till Death Do Us Porter’.

We also made our own wedding rings. My sister Hannah is a jewellery designer and maker and we had a session with her where she helped us to design and carve our rings before getting them cast. They’re truly unique and we had a lot of fun making them.

One of my favourite moments from the day is right before the ceremony. We picked ‘Songs of Love’ by Divine Comedy to play beforehand – also known as the ‘Father Ted’ theme. The lyrics are lovely, and we both love the show, but we wanted to see our guests’ faces when they recognised the tune.”

Top tip: “Delegate! I did nearly everything myself, and whilst I enjoyed all the planning and research, it is all-consuming. Kip’s advice to grooms is to have lots of little presents on hand throughout the day for your bride, incase of any wedding hiccups.”
