Seth’s roots are Scottish and I’m a French native. We met in Buenos Aires while there learning Spanish. I did not speak a word of English, but it didn’t stop us from trying to seduce one another, thanks to Google Translate.
We fell in love with Edinburgh when we visited in 2011 and thought that getting married in Scotland would be meeting in the middle, seeing as I still have lots of friends and family in France. We chose Duns Castle for its size, style, surroundings and cottages. We wanted authentic, non-modern décor and everything at Duns was exactly what we were looking for.
Our American guests were so excited to see a castle for the very first time. They were all in awe, especially when the castle was illuminated as part of the Lighting of the Borders festival.
The most special moment of the day was having my mom and dad walk me down the aisle. Seth’s dad conducted the ceremony. It meant a lot to have someone we know marry us and say special words – an emotional moment that we will cherish forever. He had no luck with his travel to Scotland owing to flight cancellations. He travelled for three days to be with us, and during that time he wrote prayers for us which made all our guests cry when he read them aloud.
It was a weekend to remember! Half of the party spoke English and the other half spoke French, but the language barrier did not stop our guests having fun. Everybody was dancing with each other no matter what language they spoke. Open bars both nights definitely made our guests happy.
After the wedding, the party continued. We went sightseeing with our guests and roamed the country as tourists. It was a joyful ‘familymoon’ together.
Top tip: “For a destination wedding, I’d recommend building a website so all information relating to your plans can be found in one place with a list of FAQs. This will save relaying the same info to guests time and time again.”
