“We were already officially Mr and Mrs when the day of our wedding dawned. We’d got the legal bit out of the way at Glasgow City Chambers a few days previously.

Our weekend wedding party then kicked off on the lawn at Cambo Estate, when our friend Graham Jones wrote and conducted a humanist-inspired ‘ceremony’ with very little input from us (as he knows us so well).

I thought I would be a blubbering mess at the altar, but I was so happy to be marrying the love of my life that I couldn’t stop smiling. Stephen was the one that got emotional. We personalised the ceremony even further. My friend and I put together a reading, and instead of a hymn, we sang ‘Perfect’ by Fairground Attraction. At the end of the service, we asked our guests to bring a football scarf to raise as we walked back down the aisle to ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’

We chose Cambo Estate because it offered everything we wanted: a country house set on beautiful grounds that we had exclusive use of for the full weekend. All the team at Cambo were great help from start to finish, especially owners Frances and Struan, and Emma, the wedding co-ordinator.

I bought my dress off-the-peg from Innate Bridals in Dundee. Its seamstress, Louise, helped to create an extra underskirt for me to dye and then attach onto the dress. The colours I used then brought to life a pastel watercolour theme that ran throughout the day.

Bespoke Catering pulled out the stops when it came to the meal. We served it family-style with a sharing starter and a roast beef main course. The crew kept coming round, topping everyone up and offering plenty of seconds. All our guests commented on how amazing the food was.

We put our own twist on the reception too. Instead of having a cash bar, we supplied beer and wine and asked each of our guests to bring a bottle to put behind a manned bar – you should’ve seen the heaving gantry! We ditched the traditional evening buffet and had a toastie station instead.”

Top tip: “Be comfortable! I accessorised my dress with heeled Nike trainers that I decorated with crystals. Similarly, Stephen doesn’t really like wearing a kilt so he opted for tartan trews from Slanj Kilts.”
