“We wanted the day to be relaxed and feel like us as much as possible, so venue choice was very important. BAaD felt like the kind of place we would go for pints, but is also beautiful, with lots of light and a cracking restaurant. There was plenty of room for us to be really creative with décor (another element which mattered to me).
We didn’t have a colour scheme for the bridal party – we asked everyone to pick something they loved and would normally wear. However, this vaguely translated into jewel tones so in the end we reflected that in the floristry. We hired festoon lighting and rustic furniture, and decorated the space with neutral crockery, greenery and lots of candles.
Predictably, we were running late in the morning so I could have thrown my dress on and ran out the door. I didn’t, and I’m really happy my mum and I took the time to make that moment special.
I’m a singer and pianist who often performs at weddings, so I’m fortunate to know lots of talented and generous musicians who donated their skills for the day. I recruited a string quartet, a gypsy jazz percussion and accordion duo and two marimba players to play me down the aisle (to ‘You’re So Cool’ from True Romance – it was amazing!). We were very lucky and felt very spoiled.
Our band Ernest also played ‘Killing in the Name’ by Rage Against the Machine at some point during the night. Everyone went absolutely mental. It was unexpected, surreal and exactly the party we wanted! My brother was so moved by the band that he was standing arm-in-arm with his best pal waving lighters by the end.”
Top tip: “Get some photos of the two of you, even if you’re not sure about this beforehand. Initially, Andy and I weren’t too fussed, but we are so glad our photographer Lisa changed our mind. Not only are they amongst the most special pictures for both of us, it was one of the few moments we had just the two of us on the day.”
