Planning a Gretna Green wedding

Few places are as synonymous with weddings as Gretna Green. For more than 270 years, couples have crossed the Scottish border to marry here, making it one of the UK's most iconic wedding destinations.

Today, Gretna Green is much more than the Famous Blacksmiths Shop. It's a collection of historic ceremony venues, hotels, restaurants and beautiful gardens that together host around 3,500 weddings every year.

We visited to discover what getting married at Gretna Green really looks like today – from its legendary ceremony rooms and modern wedding packages to the hotels, photo locations and experiences that make couples return year after year.

Why is Gretna Green famous for weddings?

Every Gretna Green wedding begins with a story.

When the Marriage Act of 1754 came into force in England and Wales, couples under 21 could no longer marry without parental consent, and ceremonies had to take place in a church.

Scotland's marriage laws were very different. Anyone aged 16 or over could marry by declaration in front of two witnesses, without needing a member of the clergy.

As the first village over the Scottish border, Gretna Green quickly became a haven for runaway couples seeking to marry in secret. Blacksmiths became the original "anvil priests", striking an anvil at the end of each ceremony to symbolise the forging of a lifelong union – a tradition that continues today.

While modern marriages follow the same legal process as anywhere else in Scotland, that rich history remains woven into every ceremony.

Where can you get married at Gretna Green?

One of the biggest surprises during our visit was discovering that Gretna Green isn't a single wedding venue.

Instead, couples can choose between several ceremony locations, each with its own atmosphere and character.

Gretna Hall Hotel & Marriage Rooms

Driving through the tree-lined entrance to Gretna Hall immediately feels like arriving somewhere special.

Set within 10 acres of gardens, the listed manor house combines period elegance with three very different ceremony spaces tucked inside its converted stable block.

Coach House

Capacity: 40 guests

Whitewashed stone walls, soaring vaulted ceilings draped with ivory wisteria and rows of wooden pews create one of Gretna Green's most romantic ceremony settings. A beautifully restored Victorian carriage completes the historic atmosphere.

Courtyard Room

Capacity: 70 guests

Still full of character, but with a more contemporary feel thanks to sparkling fairy lights and elegant Chiavari chairs.

Hidden Garden Retreat

Capacity: 20 standing

Wrapped in climbing foliage and blossom, this intimate pergola feels made for elopements, micro weddings and newlywed portraits.

Beyond the ceremony rooms, Gretna Hall offers recently refurbished dining spaces, private function rooms and 77 bedrooms, including Manor Suites named after famous Gretna couples and newly refurbished Signature Suites.

Famous Blacksmiths Shop

This is where Gretna Green's wedding story began.

The Famous Blacksmiths Shop has hosted ceremonies since 1754 and remains the destination's most recognisable wedding venue.

Alongside the ceremony rooms you'll find cafés, shops, a food hall, museum and visitor attractions, making it somewhere guests can easily spend several hours exploring before or after the ceremony.

Three ceremony rooms are available:

Original Marriage Room

Capacity: 50

The most iconic space of all.

Stone walls, exposed beams and the original anvil create a ceremony room that feels almost untouched by time.

Forge Marriage Room

Capacity: 40

A recreated working forge complete with brick walls, glowing fire and original blacksmith's tools.

Elopement Marriage Room

Capacity: 20

A lighter, more contemporary ceremony room ideal for intimate weddings.

Every ceremony concludes with the symbolic striking of the anvil — one of Gretna Green's best-loved traditions.

Smiths at Gretna Green

For couples looking for a more contemporary wedding venue, Smiths at Gretna Green offers a stylish alternative while remaining part of the wider Gretna Green experience.

Celebrations range from intimate dinners to receptions for up to 150 guests, with modern event spaces overlooking the countryside.

The hotel also features 56 bedrooms and suites, including a luxurious penthouse apartment.

During our visit we stayed in one of the balcony rooms, complete with countryside views, plush furnishings and thoughtful touches that make wedding weekends particularly comfortable.

Can you legally get married at Gretna Green?

Yes. Civil, religious, humanist and other belief ceremonies can all legally take place at Gretna Green, provided couples complete the same legal marriage process required anywhere else in Scotland.

Unlike centuries ago, you can't simply arrive and marry on the day.

However, symbolic handfasting ceremonies are available for couples wanting the Gretna Green experience without the legal formalities.

During our visit we watched one such ceremony, and while it wasn't legally binding, it was every bit as heartfelt.

Planning your legal wedding at Gretna Green starts by choosing a date, ceremony venue, and dinner and accommodation venue(s) if relevant.

Gretna Green makes that easy with its wide-ranging selection of wedding packages and an experienced wedding team on hand to advise.

Legal wedding ceremonies at Gretna Green

  • You'll need to decide what type of ceremony you want: civil (i.e. conducted by a registrar), religious (e.g. minister, priest or similar) or belief (a person like a humanist or other type of celebrant approved to do so under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977).
  • As with all weddings in Scotland, both parties MUST give notice by filling out the M10 form.
  • These must be submitted by post or in person (with an appointment) between three months and 29 days before your wedding to Gretna Registration Office. (You cannot just turn up on the day and have a legal wedding at Gretna Green.)
  • Along with the M10 form, both parties will also be required to send additional documentation and pay the associated fees.
  • Once your application has been processed, you will be notified, your documents will be returned to you, and the marriage schedule produced. The marriage schedule is the form that will be signed during the wedding ceremony.
  • If you're having a religious or belief ceremony (e.g. minister or other religious representative, humanist or other celebrant) you must collect your schedule from the office up to seven days before the ceremony. (Either half of the couple can collect it.)
  • If you are having a civil ceremony, the registrar will bring the schedule along to the ceremony and return the signed one to the registration office.
  • For religious or belief ceremonies only, the couple (or a very trustworthy family member or friend) is responsible for returning the schedule to the registration office within three days of the ceremony in order for the marriage or civil partnership to be registered.

How to get to Gretna Green

Gretna Green and the Famous Blacksmiths Shop attractions are only two minutes' travel time from the main motorway route into Scotland (between M74 junctions 21 and 22) and the M6 just north of Carlisle.

Gretna Green is on the rail line between Carlisle and Glasgow Central via Kilmarnock with train services running throughout the day.

More than just a wedding venue

One thing that stood out during our visit was how much there is to do beyond the ceremony itself.

Photo opportunities are everywhere, from the famous Gretna Green signs and Kissing Gates to the LOVE sculpture and beautifully landscaped gardens.

History lovers will enjoy the immersive museum, while foodies shouldn't miss Larder on the Border's guided "First Taste of Scotland" experience, showcasing local cheeses, shortbread and other Scottish favourites.

It transforms Gretna Green from somewhere couples simply marry into somewhere guests genuinely enjoy spending time.
