“Unfortunately, we got married on the day of Storm Brenda, but the date had been chosen specially. Stu wanted to stick to the Celtic custom of making a vow and making it again a year and a day later, so we got married a year and a day after we got engaged.
We chose Argyle St Arches for our entire day. We were both very fond of it as a venue after we’d both worked there. We loved the laidback feel and how cosy it was for a winter wedding.
The atmosphere was relaxed and organic, so we let that filter through to the decor. Our flowers were beautiful, but not too uniform, and the food was a sharing platter. We wanted our artwork featured a lot too which set the tone.
We are both wedding suppliers so we put a lot of our own touches into the day. Stu did an illustration which we used on the invites, I also hand-painted biscuits, we made activity books (which also worked as place settings), we had tea towel favours, and I painted some leather jackets for my ‘best wummin’.
I wrote a surprise story for Stu which my nieces read out on the day. It was so hard to keep it from him. It was about Selkies and love, and it was lovely watching his face as he listened. We named our tables after people with the same first name as my dad. It was a nice nod to him, as he sadly passed away in 2017.
Maggie McAllister made my bespoke sequin gown – she is incredible. She helped me get the dress of my dreams. It was a much more personal and special experience than off-the-peg and I couldn’t love it more. I teamed it with white Doc Martens, a necklace of my mother in law’s in my hair and my mum’s veil.”
Top tip: “Take your time and don’t stress about what you think you “have” to have. We didn’t do rings and no one noticed. I would encourage people to think about what they want from their day not what they think a wedding is.”
