For a lot of brides, weddings are something they’ve dreamed of since they were little girls.

That was certainly the case for Melissa, who happily admits she’d been picturing her own special day since she was three years old.

“Thankfully, Louis is laid-back and was happy to go along with it,” she laughs.

“Initially I had imagined a stately home or a marquee, but we fell in love with Brisbane House’s location. Plus, it is close to the church where we wanted to have our ceremony, which sealed the deal.

"We booked in October 2024 for the following September. Due to family illness, we wanted the wedding to happen fairly quickly.”

A timeless black and white wedding theme

As for decor and colour scheme, Melissa had already done the groundwork.

“I had a very clear vision from the start. I’ve always known I wanted clean, crisp, timeless vibes, staying away from trends or anything that would date our wedding.

"With that in mind, we went for monochrome tones, fresh white flowers and candles everywhere.”

She and Louis choose a wedding package from Brisbane House, but it didn’t hold them back when it came to personalising their celebrations.

The bride explains: “Going with a package helped with coordination on the day and also reassured us that everything was taken care of. We just enhanced the venue’s already beautiful neutral backdrop with flowers, bespoke napkins and dessert wafers with our initials.”

From church ceremony to outdoor drinks reception

After an exciting morning of getting ready in the hotel’s lavish Caledonian Suite, Louis and Melissa were ready to say ‘I do’.

Their ceremony – held in St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church just a few minutes’ walk from Brisbane House – is something neither of them will never forget.

“The highlight for me was having my dad walk me down the aisle,” says the bride.

“It was so emotional – and feels even more so now that he has sadly passed away. Being surrounded by our family and friends was lovely too.”

Wedding breakfast, speeches and an unforgettable evening reception

After the ceremony, the newlyweds returned to Brisbane House for the drinks reception.

“We were lucky enough to be able to host it outdoors. We had live music playing and our signature drinks were served. Our guests mingled, laughed and enjoyed the sunshine – it was perfect.”

Next up was dinner – a crowd-pleasing menu that included soup or smoked salmon, followed by chicken roulade or blade of beef, and ending with sorbets, chocolate compotes and lemon tarts – along with heartwarming speeches.

“They were full of laughter. Louis had our boys as his best men and their speech was absolutely brilliant. They captured the essence of the day – love, family and happiness.”

Why choose Brisbane House Hotel for a Scottish wedding

It was a stress-free day, largely thanks to the venue, say the couple. “Everything ran smoothly and the staff genuinely cared about making our day perfect.

"They were always on hand to answer our questions and offer advice.

“The front-of-house gentleman definitely deserves a special mention. He was kind, calm and so attentive.”

After making the most of the hotel’s outdoor space (the patio was the setting as couple poured their champagne tower and sparklers were set off), it was time to get on the dancefloor.

“The reception was amazing, and our band kept everyone dancing all night long. The energy in the room was incredible. I still cry looking back at the video!

“Our wedding day was everything I had ever dreamed of. Our guests commented on how much love was in the room and that everything felt so personal and joyful.”
