For Kirsty and Calum, planning their wedding wasn't about following trends. They wanted a day that felt relaxed, colourful and completely centred around the people they love.
Great food, beautiful flowers and one stunning venue where guests could settle in and enjoy every moment were the priorities. Their search led them to Falside Mill, a beautifully restored barn wedding venue near Kingsbarns in Fife.

Finding their perfect Fife wedding venue
For Kirsty and Calum, the ingredients for the perfect wedding were simple: colourful flowers, great food and all their favourite people together under one roof.

“We set our sights on a rustic venue such as a converted barn, but with some stylish modern elements,” recalls the bride of their initial plans.
“We also knew we wanted the whole wedding to unfold in one place so our guests could just relax once they arrived.”
Thankfully, from the moment they walked into Falside Mill – a sensitively restored former farm steading in the Fife countryside – they knew they’d struck gold.
“I remember we looked at each other and felt extremely emotional – we knew this was where we wanted to get married,” smiles Kirsty.
“It had everything we wanted. It was even close to St Andrews, where Calum proposed.”
Colourful flowers brought every space to life
Deciding on a colourful theme with lots of flowers, the pair took up the offer of a package from Falside that included all the must-haves: venue hire, lighting, a PA system and microphone, on-the-day coordinator, catering and even furniture.
“Falside really gave us the option to fully personalise our day.
“And, with the owner being a chef, we knew we were in safe hands with the menu.”
The whole team at Falside Mill, in fact, deserve praise for their efforts.
“They made sure they were there if we needed anything on the day, having provided constant support throughout our planning – whenever we had any questions, they would respond quickly with exactly what we needed.”

With just one slight glitch to get over (a giant Fisher & Donaldson fudge doughnut the newlyweds planned to serve instead of wedding cake had ‘Happy Birthday’ piped on top which the St Andrews bakery remedied straight away and guests prompty scoffed), it was time to make things official.
A heartfelt ceremony inside Falside Mill's Ceremony Hall
Kirsty and Calum exchanged their vows in Falside’s dedicated Ceremony Hall, a spacious, atmospheric room filled with natural light.
“Our celebrant created the perfect balance of informal but sincere, which is exactly what we were looking for,” says Kirsty.
“Calum’s sister read out a poem that was written by my uncle. It was incredibly special.”

Then, just when she thought things couldn’t get any better, all the guests sang along to ‘Life With You’ by The Proclaimers as the couple walked back up the aisle.
For Calum, too, this part of the day was a highlight.
“Seeing Kirsty for the first time at the top of the aisle was unforgettable,” smiles the groom.
Garden games, cocktails and Scottish celebrations
Everyone then moved out to the courtyard to celebrate and make the most of the sunshine.
“We wanted to ensure our guests were entertained while we were getting our family and couple portraits done, so my dad made a selection of personalised garden games, which went down brilliantly,” says Kirsty.
“The venue’s tuk-tuk cocktail bar was also very well received during this time.”
Blank canvas weddings: What they include and how to make them your own
The evening’s entertainment kicked off with a surprise organised by the bride and her mum.
“We had booked Singing Servers to appear after dessert,” smiles Kirsty.
“They got everyone involved and definitely got the party started. Then our band, Callanish, put on an amazing ceilidh, with some of our English guests [the groom is from Leeds] having a go at Scottish dancing for the very first time.”
Sounds like a dream day. “It was,” nods the bride.
“We couldn’t have asked for anything more – we had all of our favourite people in the world in one place.”
