A surprise proposal at the University of Glasgow

Holly and Jordan first locked eyes during freshers’ week at university and, as they say, the rest was history – well, four years later...

“We sat next to one another during lunch one day and started chatting. Jordan, he later told me, had a crush on me but I had a boyfriend at the time,” laughs Holly.

“But four years after first meeting, we both coincidentally ended up living near Edinburgh and we matched on Tinder. Since we already knew each other, we skipped the pre-date talking stage and made plans for a first date.”

After another four years, Jordan got down on one knee at the University of Glasgow where they first met and even had a photographer hiding in the distance to capture the moment.

Choosing Mar Hall for a Scottish summer wedding

With a dream of a Saturday summer wedding, the happy couple wasted no time in securing their venue – a five-star countryside mansion in Bishopton – for 104 guests.

“We booked two days of back-to-back venue viewings and quickly made our venue decision.

"Jordan and I always knew we wanted somewhere close to the Glasgow area that had an outdoor ceremony option, plus accommodation for out-of-town guests. Mar Hall fitted this perfectly”

Personal touches to make a wedding day unique

Personalisation was also a big part of Holly and Jordan’s special day, with the couple paying homage to many things dear to their hearts.

“Our favours were egg custard tarts, our favourite Hong Kong dessert. Jordan’s parents are from Hong Kong, and it was also our first ‘big holiday' together so it was nice to tie in another part of our story.

“Our guestbook was a photo from our pre-wedding shoot that guests could sign, and we now have it hanging up in our home.”

Where the couple found their wedding inspiration

“We both have an unhealthy TikTok habit,” the bride laughs. “This provided a lot of wedding inspiration for the aesthetic aspects. To find vendors, we attended the Scottish Wedding Show, I had a Tie the Knot Scotland subscription and also used Instagram.

“Once we had a couple vendors, we checked their Instagram posts and the tags of other vendors to see who else had worked at the same wedding.

"This is how I found my make-up artist who then recommended the hairstylist that I booked.

"The wedding industry is a very small world!”

With everything in place, including a rehearsal dinner at Mar Hall the night before, it was time to get the show on the road.

“Neither of us had any pre-wedding nerves but as soon as Jordan started greeting guests, they kicked in a little bit for him and his heart rate started racing.

“I tried to keep calm for walking down the aisle (both my mum and dad walked with me) and as soon as Jordan and I saw one another, we couldn’t stop smiling."

Writing personal vows for a heartfelt ceremony

“We had a humanist ceremony and chose to write our own vows – that was very important to us.

"Every birthday and Christmas card, we write how much we appreciate each other and what we are excited for in the upcoming year, so for our marriage, we wanted it to be similar.”

Once they were announced as ‘Mr and Mrs’, it was time for Holly and Jordan to mingle with guests and have fun.

Fun wedding reception ideas with a personal twist

“We hired a crazy golf course as our drinks reception entertainment. This was a nod to Jordan’s love of playing golf and we even had a winner’s trophy, which he presented during his speech.

“Jordan and I also decided to have a champagne tower in place of a traditional wedding cake"

“At midnight when the music finished (including a rather lively ceilidh!) we also celebrated Jordan’s birthday. Everyone headed outside for a sparkler exit and we were cheered into married life by our loved ones.”
