There is so much hype surrounding special events – whether you’re saying ‘I do’, seeing your all-time favourite singer in concert or visiting your dream destination – that it’s perfectly acceptable to be overcome with emotion when the experience ends.

That’s  exactly what Nicola felt when she tied the knot with Paul at Glasgow’s swish One Devonshire Gardens at Hotel du Vin. Fortunately for the bride, though, it wasn’t actually the end: as the last notes of ‘Loch Lomond’ melted into the final song, ‘Fairytale of New  York’, she and her new husband were able to move to the adjoining bar with their nearest and dearest to continue the celebrations.

That’s because they’d booked the hotel’s exclusive-use package. “It meant our family and friends had the use of 12 bedrooms on the night of the wedding,” says Nicola. “Paul and I had the honeymoon suite, which we also booked for the following night too. Then, for breakfast the morning after the wedding, the venue provided a private room off the hotel restaurant so that all our guests who’d stayed over could eat together. It was so lovely seeing everyone catching up again, and finding out if anyone was feeling a wee bit delicate!”

The couple say they wanted a “smallish” wedding, somewhere that would feel intimate and cosy for a winter do, and which would be easy for their 60 guests to get to. After being shown around Hotel du Vin Glasgow in the city’s west end, Paul and Nicola were won over by all the traditional features: “We loved the fireplaces, the staircase, the stained-glass windows and the lit-up Christmas trees.”

There was nothing traditional about their day, though, as Nicola explains: “We had no speeches or top table. We didn’t even have bridesmaids or a best man. Instead, our day was all about bringing together the people we love, having a fun ceremony and then getting on with eating good food, getting the drinks flowing and spending the rest of the night dancing.” The pair also shook up proceedings by choosing to meet before heading down the aisle together, and were joined by Paul’s son Eben during the ceremony. And it was all facilitated by the venue.

“Every single member of staff was fabulous – they genuinely couldn’t do enough for us from the moment we checked in until we left,” commends the bride. “Paige, the wedding coordinator, was pivotal in bringing our day together. At one point in the lead-up, I was half-worried she would cancel our booking due to the sheer number of questions I was asking – but that couldn’t have been further from the truth!”

Nicola and Paul’s exclusive-use package choice included all areas within Townhouse No.5 (essential if you want a band or DJ at night). It also gave them the honeymoon suite and 12 bedrooms with breakfast, they then added their chosen catering packages plus canapés
and an evening buffet.

“Food and drink were very important to us,” says the bride. “We were invited to a tasting session a couple of months before the wedding and chose our menu from that. There are three menus but you can mix and match from them all. This was one of the hardest decisions we had to make – I never want to have to choose between sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie again!”

After everyone enjoyed the feast, it was on to dancing into the wee hours: “Dan, our DJ, put out a QR code for guests to scan so they could request songs. As we’re a couple aged 48 and 50, the music picked by our friends was like a throwback to a ’90s nightclub! Everyone said it was just the best day from start to finish – you can’t ask for better than that.”
