Looking for the perfect engagement ring, wedding band or bespoke bridal jewellery in Scotland?

We sat down with Steven Coll, owner and director of Tom Coll Jewellery, to talk about the family-run Glasgow jeweller’s story, design ethos, and what couples can expect when visiting their showroom in the Argyll Arcade.

From diamond ring trends to bespoke commissions, here’s everything you need to know.

Can you tell us about Tom Coll Jewellery and how it began?

My father Tom and I started this business together 41 years ago. We both came from a workshop design background, and we had the passion to build not only a workshop of our own, but a fabulous showroom.

We wanted our clients to have wonderful pieces of jewellery as individual as they were, as opposed to only having the choice of what was in a shop window.

Very quickly we also started to deal in pre-owned Rolex watches (all extensively checked via The Watch Register) and this is a side of our business we have become very well known for.

My son Kieran then joined the business, nearly 10 years ago, so we’re on our third generation.

What values are at the heart of Tom Coll Jewellery?

It has always been about offering our clients fantastic pieces as well as excellent value.

That sounds like a bit of a cliché, but it’s true: it really is at the core of our business, and has never been more important than in today’s world.

Having our very own workshop also means this is something we can deliver in-house.

For four decades, Steven Coll’s mission has been to say: “Yes, whatever your dream piece is, we can make it happen for you”

Why do couples choose Tom Coll Jewellery for their wedding rings?

I think it’s partly because we’re a family business – we have longstanding relationships with many families and see them returning to us over the years.

Word travels fast these days, too, and when clients really enjoy a visit to us, they love to recommend us to others and on social media. We have a beautiful big showroom in the Argyll Arcade in central Glasgow that’s filled with stunning pieces of jewellery.

"We also have a team who care about taking the time to help you find, design or create something you’ll love forever."

And that applies to everyone – whether it’s a dazzling diamond ring you’re buying or a small sentimental item that you’re looking to get repaired. It’s all important to us.

What awards and accreditations has Tom Coll Jewellery received?

Tom Coll Jewellery is proud to be Assay Assured and a registered member of the National Association of Jewellers and The Watch Register, reflecting our commitment to trust and transparency.

We specialise in both natural and lab-grown diamonds, with collections certified by leading gemological authorities including GIA and IGI.

We’ve been recognised for excellence, too – we were named ‘Glasgow’s Best Jewellers 2025’ at the Scotland Business Awards and are finalists for ‘Best Jewellers 2025’ at the upcoming National Grand Finals.

What do customers say when they give feedback?

They often mention that their experience with us was so enjoyable because they never felt under any pressure.

As a single-branch family business, we don’t have targets or commissions that bigger companies are very often focused on.

This means my team are under no pressure to sell. They can offer free advice and enjoy finding the perfect piece for every client.

Do you have memorable stories about creating wedding jewellery?

Often a client will bring us a piece of family gold of huge sentimental value. It could be anything from their parents’ wedding rings to an old bracelet that belonged to a loved one.

Our jewellers will melt this gold down and use it to create a new wedding ring by hand, giving the client something so special and worth more than just money. We can even film the process as it happens in our workshop so you can see it for yourself.

We recently had a client come all the way up from England as they specifically wanted this service. The outcome was something so special and I know it’ll be held dear forever. There were plenty of tears and tissues that day – from all of us.

What advice would you give to couples choosing wedding or engagement rings?

Go out and visit showrooms and businesses like ours. There is so much online and on social media these days with everyone telling you what you should be buying – but it’s much better to get out there and see all the wonderful options and ideas for yourself.

Once you do, you’ll quickly start to discover what styles you love and what’s perfect for you.

How do you select or design the jewellery you offer?

Our reputation for quality is precious to me.

"To ensure that our clients will always feel confident about what we offer, I personally hand-select every single piece we have in our showroom and I’m always involved in the decisions on final designs."

Alongside that, having our own in-house workshop means we can always create the perfect piece to suit any specifics or price point.

If you’re considering Tom Coll’s services for your special day, the team (from left: Ben, Michael, Steven and Kieran) recommend starting your journey as early as possible: “With a combined almost 100 years of experience, our workshop team can be rather in demand – but definitely worth the wait!”

What are your bestselling wedding and engagement ring styles?

Classic design is classic for good reason, and I would say there is always a strong market for a beautiful solitaire engagement ring partnered with a court wedding band: simple and elegant.

Probably the most notable current design trend is the very lovely ‘Toi et Moi’ style, which sees two very different shapes and sizes sitting right next to each other and bound together.

It’s very much like our own partnerships, and I think it’s a lovely sentiment.

What wedding jewellery trends are you noticing right now?

Wedding jewellery has always remained a very similar style.

When a bride is feeling and looking a million dollars, there really is no need for anything else other than simple, elegant accents – a stunning single-stone pendant or perhaps single-diamond earrings or fine drop style ones.

The iconic dazzling diamond line bracelet never looks anything short of showstopping.

How have ring styles changed since you started in the industry?

It’s very much like clothes fashion, where a lot of different styles come and go – and often in cycles.

I’d say the style for engagement and wedding rings has become very modern and fairly simple just now. But at the same time we’re definitely seeing a resurgence in traditional or heirloom pieces like pearls.

Keep that stunning sparkle shining bright! Tom Coll clients are encouraged to pop in so that the workshop team can clean, polish and advise on the care of your jewellery – free of charge when you’ve purchased the piece from them

Do you offer resizing or aftercare services for wedding jewellery?

That’s one of the great things about having our own in-house workshop – we are able to offer everyone a fantastic aftercare service.

We actively encourage clients to pop in on a regular basis so that our workshop team can clean, polish and advise on the care of your jewellery. All of this is free of charge when you’ve purchased the piece from us.

Are there any exciting projects you’d like to share?

We have just completed a wonderful project with the Glasgow Warriors rugby team. Following their URC title win in 2024, they commissioned us to design and make championship-winner rings.

The rings were to be created strictly for the players themselves, and we were very excited, and honoured, to be entrusted with the task. To present them, we hosted a very enjoyable brunch with the players, and they were over the moon with the final result.

How can customers stay up to date with Tom Coll Jewellery?

We are constantly showcasing a lot of our wonderful pieces on our social-media channels, and you’ll find our entire collection on our website.

There is deliberately no option to purchase via the website.

"We feel everyone deserves to enjoy the whole experience of visiting our showroom in person and leaving with something they’ll treasure forever."
