“Cameron and I had been together 4½ years when he proposed in May 2021. We were on a staycation in Crail and were walking along the beach.
When it came to our wedding, we both knew we wanted a big party. We just wanted everyone to come along, celebrate and have a good time. With that in mind, we started searching for venues with plenty of on-site accommodation.
Cambo has room for almost 50 people to stay which was a massive draw. Add to that loads of rooms to pick from for ceremony and reception, and that we could make it our own for a full weekend – we were smitten.
I grew up with a religious background, so it was important to me to have some elements of that honoured in our ceremony. Cameron, on the other hand, is not religious, so we didn’t want a full church ceremony.
Our compromise was to have two of our friends marry us. Stephen and Iris got registered with the Registrar General in Scotland so they could officially conduct a legal marriage ceremony.
My dad, all my bridesmaids and I cried the whole way walking down the aisle! It was so much more emotional than I was expecting. Whilst repeating our vows, Cameron said his own name wrong. Everyone laughed so much, it eased all the emotional tension that had built up.
I wouldn’t say there was an over-arching aesthetic tying everything together – we simply selected individual elements that we liked and had friends and family pitch in.Cameron’s sister baked a ton of flapjacks for our wedding favours. We also had a giant sweetie pick ‘n’ mix stand (I am a dentist so clearly not practising what I preach!).
We made breakfast boxes and hangover packs for everyone who was staying over at Cambo. They contained bottles of water, paracetamol, chewing gum, eye masks, ear plugs and cereal bars in little bags.
My florist Aunt created all of our flowers and table decorations. She found locally grown flowers in season for March and she foraged around the grounds of Cambo for foliage. I let her have creative license as I knew she would do an amazing job. The bouquets and ceremony flower arch were beautiful.
One of my bridesmaids, Beth Wylie, is a jeweller. She made earrings for me and the other bridesmaids alongside Cameron’s wedding band.
I knew I wanted a dress with a pretty back some lace involved. On a whim, I went on a solo shopping trip to a bridal shop that was having a closing down sale. I tried on a few dresses and ended up falling in love with a lace number that, yes, had a nice back and a great train! It ticked a lot of my boxes and – even better – was only £800.
Our shortlist of wedding photographers was just that – short. I had followed Sinead Firman on Instagram for a while before we were engaged and I loved her style of work – her subjects always look so happy in her photos. We were thrilled she was available on our date. Cameron and I aren’t natural models or particularly comfortable in front of a camera, but in all of Sinead’s photos everyone just looks so relaxed and natural.
We didn’t want much fuss in terms of our wedding food. We decided to keep things quite informal, so we settled on having a hog roast for our main meal. King Boar Catering did a sterling job and the delicious roast and sides they laid on were one of the real highlights of the day.
We invited everyone back to Cambo for pizza on the Sunday afternoon. It was really nice to reminisce about the day before and share stories. Fallone’s came along with its horsebox trailer and its pizzas were incredible.
We rounded off Sunday’s feasting with our two wedding cakes from Mimi’s Bakehouse. We’d had cake-cutting pics taken the night before but everyone was too full to eat any. Safe to say, it was very much appreciated by our guests on the Sunday.”Top tip: “Really try and stick to your budget because costs can spiral rapidly otherwise,” says Aisling. “Leave 10% of your budget unallocated initially. There will be unexpected/hidden costs and you’ll be glad to have that money put aside.”
