What is Love Is Blind?
In a nutshell, the programme tests the theory of falling in love sight unseen based purely on personality and a connection formed over several dates.
The description shared by Netflix explains the show as: ‘UK singles who want to be loved for who they are have signed up for a less-conventional approach to modern dating, and will choose someone to marry without ever meeting them.
‘Over several weeks, the newly engaged couples will move in together, plan their wedding and find out if their physical connection matches their strong emotional bond developed in the Pods. When their wedding day arrives, will real-world realities and external factors push them apart, or will they marry the person they fell blindly in love with?’
How does it work?
A selection of men and women head into ‘the Pods’ (a small room with a couch and everything you need to get cosy, and sometimes activities to play) with one person in each Pod and the ability to talk to the person in the Pod across from you through a shared wall.
The catch is that you can’t see the person, and must form a relationship from the conversations you have in the Pods over 10 days. Couples who fall in love have the chance to propose to each other which moves them onto the next stage. The engaged couple then get to see each other for the first time in a grand reveal, before heading on holiday together.
After a relaxing getaway, the couple come back to their hometown to live together and meet each other’s friends and family. During this time they get to see how compatible they are and how they would fit into each other’s lives.
The show comes to a conclusion with weddings for each of the remaining couples. Once at the altar, each person must decide whether to say “I do” and become husband and wife, or say “I do not” and walk away from the relationship. And yes, we’re all highly invested and on the edge of our seat at this point.
It’ll come as no surprise that the show is filled with drama, from love triangles to disapproving families, all topped off with a dramatic reunion episode a year on from the weddings.
It’s not the most conventional route to marriage, but it does work for some people!
