From a surprise proposal at the school where they met to planning an island wedding at Mount Stuart, follow Ruby and Oskar’s wedding journey

Ruby McFarlane and Oskar Wilkie are planning their 2028 wedding at Mount Stuart in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. After getting engaged in December 2025, the couple have booked their venue and begun putting together their Scottish wedding supplier team. Read their story below.
August 2026 update – surprise proposal and planning an Isle of Bute wedding
Oskar and I met at school and have been together ever since. After living together in Manchester for almost four years and becoming cat parents to our ragdoll Frank, we’re coming up to our 10-year anniversary. I knew we would get married one day but I never thought I would be getting engaged any time soon.
So Oskar’s proposal was a huge surprise – which is crazy, as I think nearly every person in Glasgow knew except me. Everyone was in on it and every girl in my family had already tried on my ring!
It started with my older sister Molly asking me and my best friend to meet for lunch at Dishoom and then do some Christmas shopping. This didn’t seem weird, as Christmas is super-busy and my best friend lives in London so the date she gave us of 23rd December was the perfect time to catch up in the middle of the festive chaos. Molly came and picked me up and drove us into town to meet my best friend.
Instead of going on to Dishoom, though, she took us to our old school. Oskar was standing outside and I immediately realised what was happening. The girls drove away and Oskar got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was such a perfect, private moment. A teacher was leaving the school just as it happened and asked us if we wanted to go in and have a look around.
It was so nostalgic to see the classrooms where we sat next to each other, the hall where we did our exams and the girls’ toilets where my friends and I would gossip about me kissing Oskar at house parties on the weekends!

We then spent the night in the Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel & Spa – it was the cherry on top and the perfect place to wake up on Christmas Eve. We actually want to make that a tradition now.
As we were getting ready to leave the hotel, Oskar said he had one more surprise: our families were waiting in the restaurant downstairs for an engagement lunch. My sister appeared with an outfit for me to change into – a white dress, earrings and shoes. No detail was missed – everything was thought through, and I still have no idea how nobody let the secret slip!
Since then, wedding planning has been well under way. We had an engagement party with all our friends and family in Box Hub, I tried on some dresses in Eleganza Sposa and we’ve even booked our venue.
We are getting married in Mount Stuart in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, a place that means a lot to us and our families. We can’t wait for an island wedding – it feels like it’s more of a destination wedding, only without the hassle of having it in another country.
What’s next?
We still have lots to do but our date is set for 2028 so we have plenty of time to plan. I can’t wait to try on more dresses!

September 2026 update – wedding dress shopping and booking Scottish wedding suppliers
We’re home! After four years of living in Manchester, Oskar and I decided to move back to Glasgow. We’re so excited to be here, closer to our friends and family again. It was a pretty smooth move, and everything aligned so well in terms of timeline with our jobs and flat. It also means we can really crack on with the wedding planning and get things moving.
Our idea was always to marry in Scotland, but it was quite tricky to organise things when we were still based in Manchester – we had to schedule fittings or viewings around being in Glasgow for the weekend, which just slowed everything down. Now that we’re home, everything should be so much easier. We still have more than a year and a half until the wedding so there’s loads of time. Mind you, I know it’s going to creep up on us and be here before we know it!
I’ve made a start on finding my dress, and have already had an appointment at Opus Couture in West Kilbride.
I had such a lovely morning there with my sisters and mum and I got to try on some insane dresses. I haven’t quite found the one for me, though, so I’m going to book a few more try-ons. Hopefully I’ll have something by the end of the year.

I’ve had more success booking our photographers and videographers. This was something Oskar and I were very excited about and knew exactly who we wanted. We’ve been super-organised about it so ticked this off very early on. I’m very happy with the team we’ve assembled so far.
First up, content creation. Emma, aka ur bts bestie, was our top pick. She did our engagement party and created some of the best content I’ve ever seen – I go back and watch the clips she made of that night all the time! I’ve been at different events and weddings with Emma over the years so I know her quite well. I feel so relaxed around her and that makes capturing content a lot easier.
We’ve gone with Liam Flo Video as our videographer. As soon as we saw the amazing film he made of his own wedding last summer, we knew we wanted him to shoot ours too. His style is old-school, behind-the-scenes, tape-camcorder style, and I’m obsessed! Every wedding he shoots gives me FOMO – the vibe is so nostalgic and it always looks like everyone is having the best time ever. Oskar and my brother used to work with Liam in a bar in town so, again, there’s a bit of a relationship there.
Lastly, for our photographer, we’ve booked Craig and Eva Sanders. Their wedding photography is incredible, and I’ve seen their name popping up everywhere whenever I look at Scottish wedding-related things. Full disclosure: we know them too! They are family friends and I’ve known them since I was a wee girl. Again, it will be so, so nice to have people behind the camera who’ll be able to put us at ease.
What’s next?
We still have so much to do but I’m feeling quite content with where we’re up to. I really want to get thinking about entertainment and food, though, as I know this is what guests remember most about a wedding.
