After delaying their wedding twice (for happy reasons), this couple had the family get-together of their dreams in the south side of Glasgow
This wedding with blush pink, white and gold colour scheme and black-tie theme at Glasgow southside wedding venue Busby Hotel celebrated the couple's Scottish and Chinese backgrounds.
It featured two wedding dresses from Glasgow bridal boutique Eleganza Sposa that had to be altered when the bride got pregnant, while the groom looked smart in a black tuxedo suit from Glasgow suit shop Forbes Tailoring. Reception entertainment came courtesy of Scotland wedding saxophonist Shades of Sax, wedding harpist Sarah MacNeil and Chinese lion dancers.

Life doesn’t always work out quite as you intended. Just ask the new Mr and Mrs Shum. “We met on Tinder and, after two years of dating, moved in together in 2020. Ryan proposed in 2021, and we immediately booked a wedding venue,” says Rosie.

“However, we had to postpone our plans twice as I got pregnant with our first two daughters. We had a low-key legal ceremony in August 2022, but we rescheduled our wedding blessing and reception to 7th September 2024 – then I found out I was pregnant again with our third daughter! I was 17 weeks pregnant when the date rolled around, so I still feel like she was a part of our special day,” says the bride.
“My favourite part of the whole day, in fact, was having our daughters (both flower girls) running about and having fun. They’re so full of life and it was amazing having them there.”
Wedding dress alterations for a pregnant bride
Rosie had bought her two wedding dresses – “a figure-hugging and glamorous” Martina Liana gown from Eleganza Sposa, and a short, sequinned Woná Concept number for the evening – before she found out she was expecting and was worried they might not fit.
Thankfully, the ladies at Karen Rotchford Bridal Alterations in Glasgow were able to tailor my dresses to perfection and they looked amazing on the day,” says Rosie. Her two looks worked impeccably with the couple’s chic and minimal black-tie and neutral theme.
And what’s a glitzy do without some diamonds?
“Ryan bought me Cartier jewellery to wear on the big day and I’ve not taken it off since. It’s the sweetest reminder.”
When it came to planning, the couple had three main non-negotiables: the venue, the photographer and paying homage to their heritage. “We had our hearts set on the Busby Hotel as it is near my childhood home, and I have fond memories of celebrating family events there,” explains Rosie. “Its location and lovely green grounds were perfect for us.”
Ways to honour different heritages and backgrounds at a wedding
The couple were determined to celebrate both of their cultures, kicking off with a traditional minister-led Church of Scotland ceremony, and booking Hung Fut Lion Dancers to perform in the evening in honour of Ryan’s Chinese background, much to the delight of their guests.
And there was no doubt over the choice of their photographer: “Mairi Tiffoney has been a friend of mine since I was a teenager,” says Rosie. “Her incredible images are very natural, bright and airy, which was exactly the style we were looking for.”

“I knew the photos would last a lifetime and wanted my smile to be perfect so I did Invisalign, composite bonding and whitening at 1 Smile Dental (where I work) in the run-up to the wedding,” says Rosie.
Talking of friends, Rosie enlisted four of her besties (Anne, Jerri, Katie and Sophie) and her sister (Kitty) to be her bridesmaids. “The girls all know me very well and know how much of a perfectionist I am, so they were able to keep me calm and level-headed in the lead-up.”
Night before wedding ideas
They all stayed at the Busby the night before the wedding for a girlie sleepover complete with face masks and snacks – “Just like we used to do when we were younger,” laughs the bride.
“I was very nervous in the morning, but the girls were amazing at turning those nerves into excitement. It was pretty chilled, and we had so much fun getting ready together.
“My bridesmaids wore blush pink, and our guests (150 for daytime, plus another 20 in the evening) were asked to wear black-tie. We used lots of white and gold for our floral and table arrangements,” she adds.
However, not too far away, trouble was brewing… “I was oblivious to it at the time, but my mother-in-law’s oven went on fire about two hours before the ceremony, so it was a wild rush to put out the fire and get everyone at hers to the venue on time."
"Mercifully, it was just a small fire, and no one was hurt – but what a way to start the day!”
Thankfully, the only heat at the wedding was provided by the sun: “We were blessed with an amazing sunny day, so our guests were able to enjoy canapés and drinks on the terrace after the ceremony, as harpist Sarah MacNeil played.”
Aside from the sunshine, Ryan’s words to his new wife were a notable highlight. “My husband’s speech blew our guests away – everyone was laughing lots, but there was also not a dry eye. He did so well. All the speeches were great, in fact,” says Rosie fondly.
“It’s so important to enjoy every minute of your wedding. There’s so much planning and prep that goes into it, then it’s over in a flash. That said, there’s nothing at all I’d change about ours – except to perhaps relax a little more, because it all worked out so perfectly in the end.”
How to fit wedding planning around life
Top tip: “I’m a busy mum, so I’m used to being in organisation mode. The best advice I can give on wedding planning is to do it little but often. Create a list you can tick off, so you always know what’s left to do. Also: delegate tasks to your bridal party.”
