When it comes to finding the perfect Scottish wedding venue, sometimes the unexpected choice turns out to be “the one”.

That was the case for Emma and Ross Browning, who fell in love with Crossbasket Castle, a luxurious 17th-century castle hotel near Glasgow, the moment they stepped inside.

Their elegant Scottish castle wedding combined timeless romance, Michelin-star dining, and heartfelt family moments, creating a day that was every bit as magical as the setting itself.

Falling in love with Crossbasket Castle

Figuring out the right venue can sometimes be a bit like finding a wedding dress – trying on a wild card can change things entirely. That’s exactly what happened to Emma and Ross, the new Mr and Mrs Browning.

“We were originally looking for a remote countryside estate,” says the bride. “But the minute we set foot in Crossbasket Castle, we fell in love.”

The 17th-century castle and tower in the outskirts of Glasgow, now a swish hotel that can be booked on an exclusive-use basis for weddings, played host to Ross and Emma’s day earlier this summer, where they celebrated surrounded by 130 loved ones, with a further 40 guests joining the fun in the evening.

Wedding venue with multiple spaces

The couple wanted versatile spaces, and this place ticked all their boxes. “Each room had its own character,” recalls Emma.

“We loved the bedroom accommodation too, both in the castle and in its new hotel, as it allowed many of our guests to stay onsite.

“It meant we could spend time with our friends and family the night before the wedding (when we hired the Trocadero’s Terrace for a private dinner) and the day after it. Some guests had come all the way from Singapore to be with us, so it was nice to be able to make the most of their visit.”

A family-filled ceremony in the James Little Hall

With an incredibly helpful team by their side (“The staff were fantastic at answering our questions and helping us with planning, especially sales and events manager Laura MacAulay”) and everything underway, it was time to walk down the aisle – with an excited bridal party in tow.

“Our three daughters, Rose, Alice and Betty, were flowergirls, alongside our lovely niece, Ellie. Cameron, our nephew, was our page boy. With them all being aged two and under, we knew it would never be a smooth ceremony, but we leaned into it,” Emma laughs.

“It was so special to have the children there with us to enjoy the day.”

Romantic photos in the castle grounds

Following a ceremony in Crossbasket’s James Little Hall (“We’d originally booked the Catholic church where my parents had married, but changed our mind as soon as we saw this room,” recalls the bride), an outdoor drinks reception was held in front of the castle.

“There’s a fountain and stunning grounds – just the perfect place to serve drinks and canapés. Ross and I had pictures taken down by the river with the castle in the background, as well as at the bandstand area, the fountain and across at the gardens.

“Indoors, there are fabulous sweeping staircases, and we had shots taken on the balcony overlooking the reception.”

Michel Roux-designed menus and a Grand Ballroom reception

The newlyweds and their guests then headed to the Grand Ballroom for dinner and the evening reception.

“We loved the fact that everything was hosted in one room. It all flowed perfectly.

“There were speeches followed by an amazing four-course meal. Ross and I had really struggled to narrow down our menu options – we ended up having two tastings, the food was so good! All of the menus at Crossbasket Castle are overseen by Michel Roux – our guests were very excited to try the food."

An unforgettable Scottish wedding celebration

With hearts and stomachs full, it was time to party. “Our band, The Lockhearts, were brilliant, and stayed on to DJ afterwards. The dancefloor was full the entire evening – especially when we got out the sunglasses and the glow sticks!

“There’s honestly nothing we would change about our time at Crossbasket. It was perfect from start to finish.”
