Even in the age of Google calendars and Facebook reminders, it’s all too easy to forget significant birthdays and milestones. Hats off to Andrew and Damon, then, for their astute approach to setting their wedding date.
“When we chatted to the Old Course Hotel about the available options, one stuck out for us: Sunday, 7th April 2024, the eighth anniversary of our first date in St Andrews. We thought it would be quite romantic to get married on our anniversary. More importantly, it would mean we’d only have to remember one date going forward!” laughs Andrew.
The Disney-daft couple, who live in Glasgow, had initially considered getting married at the Florida theme park, but the cost proved prohibitive and in any case they were reluctant to ask their families to travel so far. Fife was special to them after holidaying there previously, so after discounting some other options, they met with the Old Course Hotel’s wedding team last February, just a month after they’d become engaged.

“We wanted a small event, and the hotel had recently introduced a micro wedding package which was perfect for the numbers we had in mind: 22 guests, two of whom were children.” The hotel is no stranger to big bashes, but downsized celebrations still get the full-service, five-star treatment.
“We never felt undervalued for having a smaller wedding, which is something we really appreciated; in fact, we couldn’t have asked for better support from the team. Our coordinator Caitlin, for instance, went above and beyond, always taking the time to answer our massive list of questions and making a note of every detail.
“The day before the wedding, we sat down with her to go over everything one last time, and when we saw her seven-page document about our plans, it totally put our minds at ease. It meant both of us were relaxed the whole day of the wedding,” recalls Andrew.
The humanist ceremony was one of the couple’s favourite parts of their weekend. They stood up in front of their friends and family and exchanged vows under the statement chandelier in the hotel’s conservatory, a stunning room filled with natural light that looks out to the world-famous golf course.
“The incredible views from every window are a massive selling point,” says Andrew.
After the ceremony, the party moved to the Library, where operations manager Jack orchestrated a lock-and-key treasure-hunt game, with a magnum of champagne as the prize.
“Jack was superb and really deserves a special mention. He was on hand throughout the day, making sure everything ran smoothly.”
Dinner was another a highlight for the newlyweds, who treated their guests to an attentively served, decadent five-course meal, with Laurent-Perrier champagne to toast the beginning of their new chapter as Mr and Mr Cunningham. “There was a great staff-to-guest ratio, so all of our guests felt like they had their own waiter. Many commented afterwards that it was the best service they’ve ever experienced at a
wedding.”
The couple were also very impressed by the spacious Fairway suite that they settled into it for three nights. Making more than a day of it is something Andrew and Damon would wholeheartedly recommend.
“Checking in the day before will give you time to get ready, unwind and take advantage of the hotel’s amazing facilities such as the Kohler Waters spa – just as we did,” says Andrew.
