A Scotland destination wedding with heritage and golf

For Americans Logan and Landon Dobbs, a wedding in Scotland was the perfect mix of heritage, sport and travel. “My maiden name is McLeod, and my family have always wanted to visit Scotland to explore our ancestral roots,” says Logan.

“Landon was thrilled when I suggested Scotland for a destination wedding – he is an avid golfer and has always wanted to play Scotland’s famous courses.”

After exploring venue options, they chose the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St Andrews, a five-star setting overlooking the iconic fairways.

“The moment we saw photos of the conservatory with its stunning light and backdrop of the iconic Old Course, we knew it was right for us,” recalls the bride.

Planning from Florida with a trusted Scottish wedding team

Planning a St Andrews destination wedding from four thousand miles away could have been daunting, but the hotel’s in-house coordinator made it seamless. “Jessica was absolutely wonderful,” says Logan. “She and the team gave us a curated list of trusted suppliers, which included our florist and venue stylist, Jordana Patrick from Jordana Events & Weddings.”

That supplier list quickly became the couple’s dream team. “Jordana, in turn, recommended photographers Craig and Eva Sanders, hairstylist Pam Doc and makeup artist Stacey Toner… It felt like a collaborative effort, and everyone worked seamlessly together to bring our vision to life.”

Because they didn’t take a pre-wedding trip, everything came down to trust. “We had to put an incredible amount of trust in them, but they exceeded every expectation,” says Logan. Her advice?

“Do thorough research, communicate your vision through moodboards and photos, and then let your vendors do what they do best.”

A symbolic ceremony and a lucky golf ball moment

The couple legally married earlier in the year at a Florida courthouse. “I’ve never been one for large, showy events,” Logan explains. “I wanted the legal side to be about us, not a spectacle.”

In Scotland, they opted for a symbolic ceremony led by Bill Bufton, a close family friend. “Bill is 85, and it meant so much that he came all that way for us,” smiles the bride. He had asked us each to write him a letter about how we met and fell in love and what made the other person unique. He wove those letters into his words, making it incredibly personal and emotional.”

With 20 guests, the day felt intimate and meaningful. “We wanted our immediate family and closest friends only, our true ride-or-dies,” says Logan.

One standout memory was her brother walking her down the aisle:

“Having him step into that role was profoundly special.”

Then came the moment only St Andrews could deliver. “Golfers were playing outside, and one of them hit a ball that struck the conservatory window mid-ceremony! Apparently, it’s good luck if that happens… Landon now has it in his office as a keepsake.”

Autumn styling, an eight-course dinner and live music

The couple leaned into seasonal tones for a spectacular autumn wedding look. “I adore fall colours – deep rusts, warm neutrals, creams and blush,” she says. “Jordana’s work on the flowers, candles, stationery and table settings created a magical atmosphere.”

Rather than a traditional party, dinner took centre stage. “We skipped the dancefloor and instead had an eight-course meal with Ginny & The Tonic doing piano and vocals in the background,” says Logan. “It felt like an elevated but cosy dinner party. We even had individually engraved menus for each guest.”

A full-circle wedding dress moment

Logan wore her mum’s 1994 wedding dress for the ceremony. “It is the same one I used to play dress-up in as a child. It meant the world to me to carry a piece of her story into my own – it felt like a beautiful full-circle moment.”

And for the couple, the best part was the time shared together. “What I loved most was that everyone was able to go on a vacation together and create new memories… this felt like a genuine celebration and getaway rolled into one.” Logan adds: “The day felt so easy and fun… And we still have that lucky golf ball to remind us of it all!”
