“Jen and I met through her brother, James, who I went to university with, but we didn’t end up getting together until a few years later. We’d been a couple for four years before becoming engaged on a romantic holiday to Sorrento.

We had a general idea of what we wanted our wedding to be like from the get-go: historic Scottish venues and a lively and fun atmosphere in which everyone could really let their hair down. In the end, we opted for Glasgow University Memorial Chapel and Òran Mór: we loved the setting and feel each offered.

Our Catholic service was conducted by Father Charles Dornan. For the reception, it was all about a relatively classic celebration. The night ended with my side of the family lifting us up to Loch Lomond, a McVey wedding ritual!

For my groomswear, I shopped around a few suppliers, but ended up back at McCalls. It offered the most personal service, plus stocked the tartan we liked the best. Jen got her Jesus Peiro gown from Eleganza Sposa – she knew it was the one as soon as she tried it on.

Music played a significant part in our big day. Jen walked down the aisle to Ave Maria on the University Chapel organ, accompanied by the Hark! Wedding Choir. We couldn’t resist investing in the Capella String Quartet, who performed at the start of the meal. They were brilliant and set a lovely tone for the first part of the reception. Our band, Forte Beat, were also incredible – the night wouldn’t have been the same without them.”

Top tip: “I’d suggest you try to get an idea of what you want in your head and stick to it. Take it from us, you don’t want the added stress or cost of changing things as you get further down the line. We genuinely never had any real problems because we followed through with our original vision – and I guess we were just lucky.”
